Transfer report: Sundowns are signing released Pirates star

Injuries to Khuliso Mudau and Zuko Mdunyelwa have left Sundowns with just Thapelo Morena as their available recognised right-back.

The club’s right back options are stretched. According to Soccer Beat, Kabo Yellow have turned their attention to Van Rooyen.

He is available as a free agent following his mutual departure from Orlando Pirates in August.

DEANO VAN ROOYEN EYES NEXT CHAPTER

The 29-year-old, affectionately known as “Die Hond” because of his relentless, never-say-die work ethic, has established himself as one of South Africa’s most reliable and resilient right-backs.

Born on November 24, 1996, in Stellenbosch, Western Cape, Van Rooyen began his football journey alongside his cousin and fellow professional footballer Ashley Du Preez.

The pair joined Stellenbosch FC as teenagers ahead of the 2015/16 season. Van Rooyen eventually became one of the most important players in the club’s history.

He made his professional senior debut in 2016 at the age of 19 against Mthatha Bucks in the National First Division, later renamed the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Over the next eight years, the defender developed from a promising youngster into a leader and club icon. He played a key role as Stellenbosch FC secured promotion to the top-flight Premiership in 2019.

By the time he left the club, Van Rooyen had become Stellenbosch FC’s all-time appearance record holder, making more than 160 appearances across all competitions.

His time in the Cape Winelands was capped by silverware when he co-captained the club to victory in the 2023 Carling Knockout Cup.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS MOVE TAKING SHAPE

In August 2024, Van Rooyen fulfilled a childhood dream when he completed a high-profile move to Soweto giants Orlando Pirates.

He quickly adapted to the demands of playing for one of South Africa’s biggest clubs, making 51 appearances for the Buccaneers while maintaining his reputation for professionalism and consistency.

During his spell with Pirates, he helped the club secure major domestic silverware, including the MTN8, while also contributing to their success in the league.

His performances also earned him a breakthrough call-up to the Bafana Bafana squad in mid-2025.

However, discussions over regular playing time eventually led to a mutual decision between Van Rooyen and Orlando Pirates to end their relationship in August 2026.
