Mixing elements from Dungeons and Dragons and the Fallout franchise, a new RPG is set to arrive next year in what already seems like a promising and good time – even if the game talks about the end of the world. Several games look back at formulas that have worked before as inspiration for what they will become, but oftentimes, there are some pretty innovative games that mix concepts that seem distant. For example, you can play a new RPG that mixes D&D with Stardew Valley right now, even if those two worlds seem severely apart from one another.

Of course, it’s no surprise that the most popular TTRPG continues to influence video games today. It did so evidently with Baldur’s Gate 3 and the upcoming Solasta 2, which is based heavily on the 5.5e ruleset, but it touches other titles, even if only slightly. Meanwhile, Fallout is still an ever-growing franchise of its own, with the release of Fallout 5 already confirmed. However, the post-apocalyptic IP’s themes and elements are also something to draw from. Now, the two major franchises are colliding in an upcoming RPG.

New Turn-Based RPG Is High-Fantasy Meets Apocalypse

Characters fight a wolf enemy in This Place at the End.

Set to arrive at some point in March 2027, This Place at the End: An Apocalyptic RPG is a tactical turn-based RPG that lives up to its title. Developed and published by Science Night Studios, this post-apocalyptic game with Fallout vibes is essentially a high-fantasy adventure set in space. This is because the remains of the world, Geodia, now float in the form of four major continents across space. Here live the final human societies, who fight to survive through their final days.

You are an adventurer in these dying lands, and you are able to recruit allies to your cause as you hunt down a lich who wants to take down the king. The premise is one you’d likely see in a classic Dungeons and Dragons campaign. There are even traditional RPG roles in the game to choose from. However, there’s more to it. There’s a lot of scavenging in search of pre-apocalypse technology, as well as magic, which goes hand-in-hand with technology.

This Place At The End Handles Deep Existential Themes

This Place at the End has 12 different paths to take, meaning 12 different endings too. These choices can affect your gameplay style throughout the campaign. The idea is that you’ll have 30 in-game days and 30 real-time hours to save the world or see its doom. The RPG tackles themes of existentialism, which are often core to the post-apocalyptic trope, and the strength to continue fighting at the end of everything.

There’s still a lot that remains to be seen as the game moves toward its release date. Nevertheless, it’s undeniable that This Place at the End already looks promising ahead of its arrival in 2027. If you’re a fan of the aforementioned franchises or the themes it portrays, be sure to keep this upcoming RPG on your radar.
