Familiar names, different faces: Aaryavir Sehwag, Anvay Dravid give throwback to another era of Indian cricket

There was something familiar about the scene at the Niranjan Shah Stadium on Friday. Years after Virender Sehwag and Rahul Dravid shared the India dressing room, their sons were together in India colours, this time at the Under-19 level.

Aaryavir Sehwag made his India U-19 debut against Australia U-19, while Rahul Dravid’s younger son, Anvay Dravid, played a gritty 18-ball 38 as India posted 182 for six in a rain-curtailed Youth ODI.

With heavy rain, the match was reduced to 20 overs a side, and for a fleeting moment, it felt like a throwback to another era of Indian cricket. Only, the faces had changed.

Aaryavir showed glimpses of the strokeplay that made his father such a compelling batter, taking on the Australian attack and finding the boundary with confidence before being caught at long-off off Spencer Green.

Watching from the stands was Sehwag, following every moment of his son’s first appearance in India colours. For someone who spent years opening the innings for the country, seeing his son walk out in the India U-19 jersey was a special moment. Perhaps, it took him back to his own first steps in junior cricket, when he represented Delhi in an U-19 fixture against Haryana.

Aaryavir’s innings was brief, but Sehwag stayed on to watch the Indian innings as Anvay forged a 69-run fifth-wicket partnership with Yashbardhan Chauhan, who scored a gritty half-century. With the Australian spinners keeping the batters under pressure, India lost wickets in clusters and struggled at 88 for four before Anvay and Chauhan steadied the innings.

Both looked set for fifties before medium-pacer Eli Brain cleaned up Anvay. By then, India had enough on the board, with Chauhan ensuring they did not lose the plot.
