TALK OF THE TOWN: It's Game Of Loans as Kit Harington steps in to rescue wife's family castle

He's destroyed White Walkers and fought for the Iron Throne – now actor Kit Harington has another battle on his hands: saving his wife’s family castle.

I can reveal that the Game of Thrones star has gallantly stepped in with a loan after the company behind Rose Leslie’s ancestral home ran into financial trouble.

Wardhill Castle in Aberdeenshire is where the couple – who met on the set of the hit HBO fantasy series – held their glamorous, star-studded wedding in June 2018. 

The sprawling 801-acre estate has been in Rose’s family for more than 500 years and today operates as a wedding and luxury holiday venue.

But this year the fairytale castle has found itself plagued by financial trouble, with the company behind the estate ordered into liquidation. 

Now documents filed at Companies House reveal Kit has stepped in with funding intended to help the business pay its creditors and seek a ‘sist’ – or pause – in the liquidation.

Kit’s intervention could give the family precious breathing space as they fight to keep the estate in their hands.

Rose’s sister-in-law Sarah, who helped organise Rose and Kit’s wedding at Wardhill, previously admitted: ‘It’s a very expensive property to maintain.’

Guests at the nuptials of the couple, now both 39, included co-stars Maisie Williams, Sophie Turner and Emilia Clarke.

 Fans joked that it was the first successful Game of Thrones wedding, given the show’s Red Wedding ended in a massacre.

The latest real-life drama is particularly awkward given the Leslie family’s history with grand properties. 

Back in 2018, Rose’s father Sebastian, a former Tory councillor, lost possession of another family castle, Lickleyhead, also in Aberdeenshire, after falling behind on mortgage repayments.

That 16th-century, eight-bedroom pile is now on the market again, for offers over £1.15 million.

Kit Harington and the Leslies refused to comment last night.

It’s surely only a matter of time before socialite Lady Lola Bute walks down the aisle given her proficiency at catching wedding bouquets – that classic harbinger of luck.

Lola caught her second one this year when she attended the nuptials of her make-up artist pal India Excell in Sicily last week. 

India married dashing writer and director Finn Constantine at Tonnara di Scopello, where pop star Charli XCX held her bash last June.

In May, Lola snatched the bouquet at another wedding. It’s rumoured the 27-year-old has rekindled her relationship with her Dutch former model boyfriend, Parker Van Noord, but he has been suspiciously absent from her Instagram feed recently.

The two-bedroom maisonette, which was once owned by the film’s screenwriter Richard Curtis, could be yours for a hefty £8million – though the lucky owner will have to contend with hordes of iPhone-wielding tourists who, 27 years on, are still gathering outside for the obligatory selfie.

The 48-year-old, who owns The Half Moon in Kirdford, West Sussex, added: ‘Hopefully Andy Burnham will give us a break and do something with VAT. Who knows?’

As for her pub’s chances of surviving five years? ‘Slight.’
