A stalwart in domestic red-ball cricket, Sarfaraz Khan has once again sent a clear message to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee, notching up a 154-run knock for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy on Tuesday. The gritty middle-order batter has long been the face of India's resolute batting talent in domestic red-ball formats, yet has been devoid of a consistent run in the national team. On Tuesday, Sarfaraz carved out a magnificent knock against Himachal Pradesh in Bilaspur.

Scoring what was his 18th first-class century, Sarfaraz sent a timely reminder of his hunger for runs. Arriving at the crease under pressure, the middle-order batter showed patience and resilience in the initial testing phase before shifting gears, anchoring Mumbai's innings alongside vital partnerships with captain Siddhesh Lad and wicketkeeper Akash Anand. It was an innings defined by classic temperament.

Sarfaraz's consistent domestic exploits continue to contrast sharply with sporadic status in the national set-up. Having made his long-awaited Test debut and shown promising glimpses of grit against top-tier international bowling, his subsequent absence from India's red-ball squads, including upcoming series against New Zealand, sparked widespread debate among pundits and fans.

Critics and selectors have often weighed fluctuating team balance, fielding standards, and specific tactical combinations overseas against his high-volume runs. Being sidelined despite a solid start to his Test career could easily deflate a player, but Sarfaraz has continued to show a great appetite for runs and the determination to earn a comeback.

He was named in the India squad for the Sri Lanka assignment but didn't get an opportunity to bat. Later, he was left out of the New Zealand tour.

At 28, Sarfaraz stands at a crucial crossroads in his career. Modern cricket history is littered with domestic giants who had to relentlessly bang on the selectors' door before cementing their places, and Sarfaraz's case is not different at all.

His future prospects in the Indian Test team will heavily depend on two things. Firstly, h he has to continue to remain consist in domestic red-ball tournaments like the Ranji Trophy and Irani Cup. Secondly, he has work on sharpening his game against high-pace, high-bounce challenges. India's middle order is always subject to fierce competition, but consistency is a currency that selectors cannot ignore indefinitely.
