How to play PowerBall

How to play PowerBall: pick 5 numbers from 1 to 50, plus one PowerBall number from 1 to 16.

A board costs R10.00, and matching all six numbers wins the jackpot.

Lower divisions pay out for matching fewer numbers, right down to matching just the PowerBall on its own.

Draws take place every Tuesday and Friday at 21:00, broadcast on e.tv and SABC.

If you’d rather not pick your own numbers, a Quick Pick lets the terminal choose a random set for you.

You can also add PowerBall Plus for an extra R2.50 per board, which enters the same numbers into a completely separate draw held straight after the main one, with its own jackpot and results.

Why tonight’s jackpot has grown

Friday’s draw came and went without a jackpot winner, meaning the guaranteed prize rolled over into tonight’s draw.

Rollovers happen whenever no single ticket matches all five main numbers plus the PowerBall, and the unclaimed portion carries forward, growing the pot for the next draw.

Where to buy your ticket

PowerBall tickets are available at any authorised Sizekhaya retailer, including many supermarkets, garages and convenience stores nationwide.

Look for the National Lottery signage at the till point, and tell the cashier you’d like to play PowerBall, or ask for a Quick Pick if you don’t have numbers in mind. Tickets close at around 20:30 on draw nights, so it pays not to leave it too late.

I always find draw night oddly exciting, even when I’m not the one holding the ticket. There’s something about knowing millions of South Africans are checking the same numbers at the same time.
