Singapore to strengthen Asean unity, integration under 2027 chairmanship, says Wong

SINGAPORE, Aug 24 — Singapore vows to do everything it can to strengthen Asean centrality and unity, deepen integration, and make the region a more effective single market, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said. 

Speaking at the National Day Rally 2026, Wong said as the republic assumes the Asean Chairmanship next year, it will also continue to strengthen partnerships beyond the region amid the challenging global environment stemming from the West Asia conflicts. 

These include bringing diverse partners together, building common ground, and keeping channels for dialogue and cooperation open between Asean and other regions. 

“Even as we work with others, we cannot assume that they will come to our rescue when troubles come. 

“Ultimately, we must be able to stand on our own and take care of our own,” he said yesterday adding that the West Asia conflicts can escalate far beyond the current situation. 

Wong emphasised that Singapore as a major business and finance hub plays an important role in global supply chains by connecting and creating value for the world. 

He said the republic will seek to make itself even more relevant and create more opportunities for Singaporeans by reaching out to more partners.

“Investors trust us; they know Singapore is a place where the rule of law prevails, institutions are strong, and contracts and commitments are honoured.

“When Singapore gives its word, we keep it. In a world where trust is becoming harder to find, this remains one of our greatest strengths,” he added. 

During his more than one-hour-long speech, Wong also outlined more support for Singaporean families, including childcare leave and a higher income ceiling for Singaporeans who wish to buy a Housing and Development Board (HDB) flat.

In addition, the prime minister also announced major infrastructural development plans, including merging islands such as Semakau, Bukom, and Pulau Sudong for industrial and power needs, as well as the feasibility of building an undersea tunnel from the mainland to Pulau Tekong. — Bernama
