After 15 years, Avengers: Doomsday will officially turn the bravest line ever spoken in the Marvel Cinematic Universe into a devastating tragedy. Avengers: Doomsday will see Earth's Mightiest Heroes pushed to the brink, as Doctor Doom arrives with a plan that threatens the stability of the entire multiverse. The movie will see the return of many familiar faces across many aspects of Marvel's multiverse, from 20th Century Fox's X-Men characters to the latest Fantastic Four team.
It will also feature the return of some classic heroes who have been around since the very beginning. This includes Thor, who dons his Avengers: Infinity War hairstyle as he goes up against Doctor Doom, motivated to protect his adopted daughter, Love. Steve Rogers is also set to come back, with one of the Avengers: Endgame Encore post-credits scenes confirming Loki will be bringing him out of retirement to fight Doom. This brings multiple generations of Avengers together for the movie, while also offering an epilogue to Steve's story despite Endgame having given him a conclusion.
But Avengers: Doomsday isn't just going to be about heroes coming together to face Doctor Doom and save the multiverse. The context under which everyone joins forces will recontextualize the MCU. Not only has this been confirmed by the announcement of new movies like X-Men and Ghost Rider in 2028, but also through the way its heroes will return. In the case of Steve, it renders one of his classic lines, and one of the bravest ever spoken in the MCU, a more tragic reality that he'll be forced to face.
Steve Rogers' Iconic Line Is The Perfect Example Of MCU Heroism
Steve Rogers' most iconic line in the MCU is "I can do this all day." He first speaks the line in Captain America: The First Avenger before he gets his powers, emphasizing his determination to always stand up and fight, even when the odds are against him. He speaks it later on in the movie when battling Red Skull, continuing his approach as a determined hero always fighting for justice. This line has followed him throughout the MCU, becoming the line his character is most associated with.
The line may be simple, but it reflects how Steve is willing to do whatever it takes to protect the people he cares about while doing the right thing. This means always being at the front of the fight, always doing whatever he can to make things right. It's a level of determination that has made his character so vital to the MCU, as a beacon of hope that he will fight no matter what comes his way. But, in the context of Avengers: Doomsday, this line takes on a whole new meaning.
Avengers: Doomsday Changes Steve Rogers' Line
Steve Rodgers' return ultimately changes the line "I can do this all day" to have a more tragic meaning. As Avengers: Endgame Encore depicts, Steve is going to be dragged away from the life he built with Peggy Carter back into the high-fantasy, sci-fi battles that defined his time as Captain America. He's sacrificing his peace for the sake of the multiverse, but seemingly not by choice. Instead of being able to do it all day, he now has to do it all day, lest the multiverse be destroyed.
Question 1 of 3
It's unclear how this will change Steve's character, or what it means for the future Avengers: Endgame promised for him. It appears his peace is going to be upended, and there's no way of knowing when, or if, it will ever return to him. For now, it seems like Avengers: Doomsday is his final fight, but what exactly that will mean for his character remains unknown. Hopefully, he really can keep doing this all day and aid in saving the multiverse from Doctor Doom's wrath.
