When Rajinikanth arrives on screen, you witness the hysteria in the theaters! That’s it! Last year, when I watched him in Coolie in the Hindi version, I realized he’s one true-blue OG pan-India superstar! And now the craze for the superstar in the North Belt hasn’t changed a bit as I watch Jailer 2 in Hindi in a theater in North India, with the audience glued to the screen like anything! He walks onto the screen, and suddenly every frame feels like an event!

Jailer 2 Movie Review: Script Analysis
Nelson Dilipkumar takes the world he built in 2023, picks up the narrative threads of Tiger Muthuvel Pandian’s retired-yet-lethal life, and amps up the dark humor to maximum volume. The setups are crisp, the comedy tracks involving Yogi Babu and Suraj Venjaramoodu land with precision, and the world-building takes time. When Rajinikanth makes his entry, not with a flashy, glamorous shot but with a quiet swagger, it sets the tone for an incredible first hour.
But does the film live up to the expectations it built? Well, not really! And that is where all goes downhill. But we will come to that part later. First, let me walk you through the basic premise of Jailer 2. The film begins where the first film ended. Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, the retired Jailer, wants nothing more than a quiet life with his family. Peace, however, doesn’t last long in a Rajinikanth’s mass film.
The main man who was involved in the syndicate in the first installment finally arrives. The man has a lot at stake because of some missing items that are worth 5000 crore or more! This syndicate has set its sights on Tiger – a man who once ran a jail like his personal kingdom and eventually, his inner beast wakes up once the villain sets his eye on his family!
What’s different this time is the structure. The first half spends its time in the lives of seemingly unrelated people, and only slowly lets you see why Muthuvel is wandering among them. The second half then moves to the villains’ territory, and that’s where the trouble begins for Jailer 2.
Jailer 2 Movie Review: Star Performance
Thalaivar isn’t just performing; he is God-ifying in every frame, if that word means anything! His calm demeanor switching instantly into a cold-blooded assassin remains the film’s greatest asset. Even when the script falters, Rajinikanth’s sheer screen presence holds the entire film together on his shoulders.
SJ Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Vidya Balan, and Jatin Sarna bring their combined energies for a heavy antagonist track on screen, but all of their characters are underwritten. They try hard to infuse a chaotic, manic energy into the narrative, but the writing limits their impact. Mithun Chakraborty provides a grand veteran presence, yet feels severely underutilized in the grand scheme of things. Vidya Balan is the most heartbreaking waste of this season!
Ramya Krishnan as Muthu’s wife continues to be the grounding emotional anchor, offering brilliant domestic hold over the story, leading the personal front strongly! Yogi Babu & Suraj Venjaramoodu’s comedy tracks are a massive win for the film. They keep the first half breezy and hilarious.

Jailer 2 Movie Review: Direction, Music
Let me say this first: the first half of Jailer 2 is Nelson at his playful best. The film takes its time, drops you into the activities of secondary characters, and keeps cracking jokes while you wonder where it’s all going. And then the interval hits. The setup finally falls into place, and for a good 70 minutes or so you’re in a theatre that’s laughing, clapping and whistling. The action comedy is the backbone here. The gags are situational, and it works like a charm.
But then comes the second half, and the film starts losing its way. The villains arrive in full force, the tone shifts towards a more serious, revenge-driven action drama, and the quirky writer who was holding your attention suddenly does not know how to handle this stuff! This is a territory Nelson badly stumbles at!
The bigger issue here is the stakes. The film wants you to believe that these villains are dangerous, but we’ve seen this movie before. The moment Muthuvel gets into a tight spot, a big star is bound to show up and say he owes him a favor from years ago. I mean, there is nothing much at stake when he has help a phone call away! That too, help in the form of Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, Jackie Shroff, and oh-so-good-looking Hrithik Roshan! I mean all the good men, once upon a time, were bad men locked up in Tihar Jail, with Jailer Tiger trying to make good men out of them!
Nelson Dilipkumar has literally made the same film with better shots, better action, better cameos, but only with a weaker screenplay! As the old saying goes: a hero is only as good as his villain. And that is precisely where Jailer 2 stumbles hard after an absolute banger of a first half.
Anirudh Ravichander once again operates like an absolute mad scientist on the music front. The Hindi version, despite not even giving a hint of what those lyrics are, works entirely because of the grand music!
If the first half is a runaway train of pure entertainment, the second half suffers from the classic trope: you have built a glorious world and written a godly protagonist, but you don’t know what to do with the story once the villains arrive! Instead of focusing on a singular, terrifying threat like Varman (Vinayakan) in the original, Nelson overcrowds the narrative with a syndicate of antagonists. The moment SJ Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Jatin Sarna, and Vidya Balan enter, the story loses its plot!

Jailer 2 Movie Review: The Last Word
There are stars, there are superstars, and then there is Rajinikanth, a cinematic force who can sit silently, adjust his glasses, take a slow sip of tea, and somehow make an entire theater explode into deafening whistles! In director Nelson Dilipkumar’s highly anticipated sequel Jailer 2, the 75-year-old superstar proves once again that pulling off a high-octane mass masala film at such a majestic level is entirely beyond belief.
Jailer 2 is literally a film of two halves and not finely divided. The first half is entertaining, and it’ll have you laughing and whistling. The second half runs out of ideas, and the villains, who should have been the film’s strongest weapon, turn out to be its weakest. Despite these flaws, it is a quintessential big-screen commercial entertainer driven entirely by Rajinikanth’s charisma and Nelson’s humor!
3.5 stars.
