Italy’s new generation: Why Mancini is already running out of time

Roberto Mancini has called up ten potential debutants for his new Italy national team. However, the Azzurri coach has acknowledged that he won’t have much time to implement his plans.
Mancini has signed a contract until 2030, returning as the Nazionale’s head coach this past July.
The 61-year-old has called up 34 players for upcoming matches against Belgium, France and Turkey, which the Azzurri will meet twice during this break, at home and away.
“We don’t know how long it will take, but we’ll have to be quick in understanding the players we have and figuring out what they can give us in the future,” Mancini said in his first Italy press conference at the beginning of the international break.
“Some experienced players have remained at home, but they might be useful in the future. We already know them, so we wanted to get to know the young ones. We have important matches coming up, official games right from the start, with no room for mistakes. We have to win and climb back up the rankings.”
The Azzurri have been placed in the Nations League A1 Group, and Mancini knows he’ll need to test young players while delivering consistent results from the start of his second tenure.
Mancini initially called up nine potential debutants, but the list expanded to ten when Matteo Ruggeri was called to replace the injured Federico Dimarco.
For years, Italy fans have called for a younger, fresher squad, but now that Mancini has included some new faces, he knows they’ll have to adapt and prove their worth quickly.

“In the past, we didn’t have many [young players]. We are happy they are flourishing now,” Mancini added in his press conference.
“They have the technical skills and physicality. In the past, we had enormous technical quality and not so much physicality.
“Many young players are here for the first time. They are happy to be here and want to give their all for the national team. When you start doing something, you want to do it beautifully and keep the fans entertained. I know we’ll take something home over the next four years. I know something about footballers, they only need to play.”
