Pune to host 2032 Road World Championships, cycling’s global showpiece comes to India

Pune has won the bid to host the 2032 UCI Road World Championships, bringing cycling’s premier road event to India for the first time.
The decision was announced at the UCI Congress in Montréal, Canada, following final presentations by Pune and Groningen/Drenthe of the Netherlands. Colombia and Mexico had been eliminated earlier in the candidature process. Pune’s bid was a joint effort by the Government of Maharashtra and the Cycling Federation of India (CFI), with support from the Government of India.
A three-member UCI inspection team visited Pune from September 4 to 6 to assess proposed venues and race infrastructure, including the Balewadi Sports Complex and Savitribai Phule Pune University. The candidature also drew on the experience of the Bajaj Pune Grand Tour, a UCI 2.2 stage race.
The 2026 Pune Grand Tour involved coordination across more than 25 government departments and used 437km of race-ready roads. The bid envisages building on that experience through 2032.
The UCI Road World Championships feature elite riders competing for the sport’s rainbow jerseys. The event was held in Kigali in 2025 and Montréal in 2026, with upcoming editions scheduled for Abu Dhabi in 2028, Denmark in 2029, Brussels in 2030 and Trentino in 2031.
Pune’s bid also includes plans to expand cycling participation, develop athletes and coaches, upgrade infrastructure and strengthen women’s and youth cycling.
