Marvel Confirms The Hero Punisher Is Scared Of More Than Anyone

Jared is a writer, editor, and Communications Studies graduate who loves popular nerd culture (almost anything to do with Marvel, DC, Star Wars, or The Lord of the Rings) and the interactive storytelling medium. Jared's first console was the PS1, wherein he fell for Spider-Man, Spyro the Dragon, and Crash Bandicoot.
You’d think Punisher would be as happy as a pig in the mud to be able to let loose in a Manhattan that’s been isolated from the rest of the world in an impenetrable dome to imprison a rampaging zombie cult. He certainly didn’t break a sweat slaying Zombie Iron Man, who was busy gnawing on a corpse, and killing the living dead is a refreshing change of pace when he’s so accustomed to killing the actual living.
Punisher is the protagonist in the five-issue limited series Marvel Zombies: War Zone, and readers get to hear his thoughts as narration for the book. Still, it doesn’t take hearing what Frank Castle truly thinks to see, throughout Marvel Zombies: War Zone #1, a few instances determine beyond a shadow of a doubt that Punisher is out of his depth and terrified of Zombie Thor.
Thor Is Officially Punisher’s Worst Nightmare In New Series
The first instance is early on, when Punisher blows Zombie Iron Man to smithereens with a grenade launcher and collects the helmet with Tony Stark’s decapitated head still inside. And, looking to the sky, the only word that Punisher can utter when he sees Zombie Thor flying overhead is: “$%!” He then thinks, “Live to fight another day,” and ducks into a tunnel.
The second instance is when Punisher is giving Microchip a brief sitrep, saying: “Zombie super-freaks everywhere, hunting down uninfected muckrakers like us. Speaking of, pretty sure taking out Zombie Stark got Zombie Thor’s attention. Time we didi the hell outta here before he comes knocking.” Punisher’s not wrong to overthink about Zombie Thor having been alerted to Zombie Iron Man, as that’s indeed what Zombie Thor flew to Gorgon to discuss, but you can practically hear Frank clearing his throat, and he’s incredibly antsy and eager to leave their hideout as soon as possible.
The third instance is when Punisher mentions that he’s been so focused on keeping his eyes on the skies for Zombie Thor that he’d forgotten to stay wary of street-level villains like Jigsaw. He’s so preoccupied with his fear of Zombie Thor, in fact, that he’s unable to react quickly enough to save Micro from being bitten and turned by one of Jigsaw’s goons-turned-Hunger zombies.
Plus, the reason he and Micro were out on the street at all? Zombie Thor, with Punisher admitting: “Shouldn’t have brought him out here, Zombie Thor or no. What the hell was I thinking?”
Will Punisher Be Brave Enough To Wield Mjolnir?
To be fair, anyone in their right mind would be afraid of a zombified son of Odin, regardless of whether or not this newly recruited slave of Gorgon is unworthy of wielding Mjolnir—a paramount beat in the plot that may result in Punisher being worthy enough to wield Mjolnir, as well. That said, Punisher arguably doesn’t have a right mind, nor does he ever express genuine fear toward someone else.
Therefore, it’s wonderfully endearing to see Frank so nervous. Punisher will have to overcome this fear and muster a tremendous amount of courage, though, if he’s going to potentially learn he’s worthy enough to defeat Zombie Thor with his own hammer. Meanwhile, the solicitation for Marvel Zombies: War Zone #2 reads as follows:
ENTER THE DRAGON AND DESCEND INTO HELL AS THE HUNGER TAKES HARLEM! As a bruised and beaten PUNISHER makes his way down Manhattan towards the source of the Zombie outbreak, his journey puts him on a collision course with none other than LUKE CAGE and IRON FIST! But when the DAUGHTERS OF THE DRAGON join the fray, Frank Castle discovers that he might have bitten off more than he can chew. As the city continues to descend into chaos and warfare, Frank will have to prove just why his bite is worse than his bark if he’s got any hope of surviving THE HUNGER!
Marvel Zombies: War Zone #2 is scheduled to be released on October 21, 2026.
Who do you think would be the scariest zombified Marvel character to run into?
