Coronation Street's Kit story praised by real-life breast cancer survivor in powerful interview

Coronation Street's groundbreaking storyline involving Kit Green has been praised by a real-life survivor of breast cancer, with the figure sharing that the arc has been true to their experience.

The storyline, which has been developed in collaboration with Macmillan Cancer Support and Breast Cancer Now, saw the police officer diagnosed with stage three breast cancer earlier this month.

In addition to Kit's health battle, the issue-based storyline will also explore his feelings of shame, and how he interacts with his family and close friends as he gets to grips with the devastating diagnosis.

The arc has been lauded by viewers, with a male survivor of the disease expressing their praise during an appearance on BBC Breakfast on Thursday (17 September). They recalled their own experience, and said that the storyline was told with authenticity and care.

It remains to be seen how the storyline will progress in the coming weeks, though actor Jacob Roberts - who plays Kit - recently teased some of the details in an exclusive interview with Digital Spy.

"I genuinely didn't know that men could get breast cancer, so I felt – to make it authentic – that Kit shouldn't know either," he explained. "Speaking to charities about this storyline has been really insightful, because a lot of men didn't know they could get it.

"It was hard because a lot of the moments where Kit went for his initial check-ups took place off screen. I didn't want to join the story where Kit already knew he had breast cancer, because I thought that'd take away the shock element of it."

"You start to realise when you go into the breast clinic and it's full of women – and even on the leaflets, it's all women," he added. "So it's that question of: 'This doesn't seem normal. Why is this happening to me? Why is there not much information for men?'"
