Malaysian and Hong Kong Stars unite for new Chinese New Year film ‘Golden Blessings’ scheduled for February 2027 release

PORT DICKSON, Sept 9 — Malaysian and Hong Kong stars have come together for a new film, Golden Blessings, which is currently being filmed entirely in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan.

Production, now in its third week, has taken place at two hotels — Grand Lexis and Lexis Hibiscus.

The film is directed by Hong Kong filmmaker Mak Ho Pong, who previously directed Never a Thief and Love Suddenly.

It is produced and written by Edmond Wong, the screenwriter and original story creator behind the acclaimed Ip Man franchise that starred Donnie Yen.

As a Chinese New Year production, Golden Blessings combines romance, family, comedy and treasure-hunting adventure, with much of the story unfolding inside the Port Dickson hotel, Mak said at the film’s launch at Grand Lexis yesterday.

The storyline centres on a group of people from vastly different backgrounds who unexpectedly find themselves brought together at the hotel.

What begins as an ordinary hotel stay soon develops into a hilarious hotel-wide treasure hunt filled with misunderstandings, unexpected encounters and surprises.

Golden Blessings is presented by Enotech Films and Mandarin Pictures Production, in association with Astro Shaw, Sil-Metropole Organisation, Shanghai Pictures and BaoZhijie Group.

Malaysia was selected as the film’s key filming locations in part because of its rich multicultural identity, as well as the country’s ongoing efforts to promote tourism through the Visit Malaysia campaigns for 2026 and 2027.

A representative from the production team said the film would provide an oppurtunity to showcase Malaysia’s diverse culture and destinations to international audiences, while also contributing to the promotion of Visit Negeri Sembilan 2026 and 2027.

Malaysian stars Andy Teh and Miko Wong step in

Among the Malaysian stars attached to the project is Andy Teh, who has been making a name for himself in the local film industry following acclaimed roles in Blood Brothers: Bara Naga and Abah Saya Uncle Mike.

Teh plays Ko, a martial arts stuntman, a role that came with its own challenges, particularly having to deliver his lines in a Cantonese dialect he was not accustomed to.

He eventually mastered his lines within three weeks, even asking a friend to record them in Cantonese so he could listen to the recordings repeatedly and improve his pronunciation.

“My character is the one who holds the map and receives the clues.

“He arrives at the hotel and then joins the Hong Kong cast, and together they begin looking for the treasure.

“Of course, there are many things that happen along the way.”

Teh added that this was his first time working with mostly Hong Kong cast, as well as his first collaboration with director Mak and producer Wong.

The Malaysian ensemble also includes Miko Wong, who has played roles in previous features like Night King.

“This is the first time I get to act in a movie with so many first-tier Hong Kong cast,” she said.

Also a prominent social media figure with over one million Instagram followers, she now plays a wealthy heiress, Charlotte Mok, in Golden Blessings.

A cross-generational Hong Kong cast

The film brings together a mix of established and contemporary Hong Kong stars.

Owen Cheung plays Ryan Cheung, a character he described as his “favourite dream character”, joking with the media yesterday that he particularly enjoys the role because the character is rich.

Meanwhile, Benjamin Yuen, who recently completed filming the Malaysian feature Black Ops, returns to the country for a second production, playing Adrian Chan, a workaholic hotel manager.

Ruco Chan plays Loong, a gangster boss, while Mandy Wong portrays Teresa Mak, which she describes as a “big-sister figure who is also a housekeeping supervisor.”

Veteran Hong Kong star Kent Cheng Jak-si plays Mr Mok, with Emily Kwan as Mrs Mok.

The cast also includes Ha Yu as Uncle Wong, Shirley Chan as Summer Ha, a Key Opinion Leader (KOL), and Stefan Wong as Fei.

Describing the film, Ha said Golden Blessings is a traditional Chinese New Year story featuring romance and comedy, with its romantic-comedy elements spanning different generations.

“The movie is a very traditional Chinese New Year story with a love story, rom-com kind of genre,” he added.

“This movie’s rom-com is across different generations.”

A festive cross-border adventure arriving in 2027

Golden Blessings marks another example of Hong Kong stars and international film projects choosing Malaysia as a filming destination.

With a combination of Hong Kong performers, and Malaysian talents, the film brings together a diverse ensemble for a festive comedy adventure set against the backdrop of Port Dickson.

Kent Cheng, the Ip Man and Why Me? star, expressed hope that audiences would support the film and enjoy its story.

“I hope everyone will support this movie and hope more people will love the story,” he said.

Filming for Golden Blessings is still ongoing, with the film scheduled for release on February 4, 2027.
