Marvel Gives First Official Look At Adult Miles Morales, And It’s Heartbreaking

Aside from the iteration of the character in Sony’s Spider-Verse movies, Miles Morales isn’t making many waves, and certainly not in Marvel Comics. Sure, a brand-new ongoing run for Miles Morales: Spider-Man recently began, but it’s arguably been a backstep for the wall-crawler, and has disappointingly obliged by the status quo of Marvel’s sliding timescale and refused to make Miles any older.

Ahead of its full release on Wednesday, September 30, The Amazing Spider-Man’s milestone issue #1000 has had a limited release for select retailers participating in Local Comic Shop Day. In one of the issue’s special guest anniversary stories, readers are given a look at a version of Miles that we probably won’t ever see again.

Marvel Teases A Glimpse Of A Middle-Aged Miles Morales

For anyone who is sadly unable to find a Local Comic Shop Day copy in the wild, preview pages have been released for Noah Hawley and Patrick Gleason’s special guest anniversary story for The Amazing Spider-Man #1000, “Still Standing.” As per ComicBook, this preview depicts a much older Peter living in a nursing home.

Here, a panel is dedicated to a series of framed photographs he has collected that chronicle his personal/family life, including one of Peter and Mary Jane Watson’s wedding day and, intriguingly, one of him and Miles as middle-aged men. It’s assumed that this is Miles, at least, because both he and Peter are posing with the same ‘THWIP’ hands.

“Still Standing” is certainly one of the more ordinary and optimistic takes on Peter as a senior citizen, seeing how grimy and harrowing Spider-Man: Reign’s dystopia is, and being enveloped by his loving family in a nursing home is irrefutably preferable to his fate in J. Michael Straczynski’s “Last Stand” story. Of course, Straczynski gave that story some sorely needed closure and ended it heartwarmingly in “Soft Words at Sunset,” a special guest anniversary story appearing in Mary Jane: Face It, Tiger #1.

Why We’re Unlikely To Ever See This Miles Anywhere Else

It’s likely that we’ll never get to see Miles actually age this significantly due to the same sliding timescale that Peter has been leashed to. Peter hasn’t aged beyond his late-20s/early-30s, for instance, and Miles is still in high school, demonstrating Marvel Comics’ unwillingness to have either of them grow older.

That’s the beauty of a special guest anniversary story, anyway, with legendary Marvel Comics and Spider-Man storytellers able to eschew the constraints of The Amazing Spider-Man’s status quo. “Still Standing” also proposes that Peter named his son Miles after Miles Morales, which, in tandem with this photograph of them, suggests that they only ever became closer as friends in whatever semblance or tangent of a continuity this flash-forward story takes place in.
