Puan calls for transformative leadership across state institutions

Jakarta (ANTARA) - House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Puan Maharani has underscored the importance of fostering transformative leadership across all state institutions to promote governance that prioritizes national interests and public welfare.

She made the remarks in her keynote address at the 2026 Habibie Democracy Forum in Jakarta on Tuesday, which carried the theme “Transformative Leadership for Inclusive, Resilient, and Sustainable Democracy.”

“Transformative leadership must grow across all state institutions as a key agenda to strengthen and sharpen ways of thinking and working, increasingly placing governance in the service of national interests,” she said.

Puan said Indonesia’s current leadership challenges could be viewed at three levels: structural challenges facing the nation, challenges in the governance of power, and challenges in shaping the country’s future.

Addressing these challenges requires meaningful collective transformation, she said. Such transformation cannot be achieved merely through policy changes or leadership transitions, but must also involve shifts in mindsets and working methods.

She also cautioned that recognizing the importance of good governance does not automatically ensure that reforms can be implemented effectively. All elements of the nation must therefore share a common vision and commitment to improving governance.

“It cannot be left to just one, two, or three people to declare what needs to be done. We need a shared vision and a common commitment to improving this nation and state,” Puan said.

“If we do not work together through mutual cooperation, things will remain as they are. Nation-building cannot be carried out individually; it must be a collective effort,” she added.

Puan further said that every party should take steps toward change in accordance with its respective responsibilities and authority, rather than waiting for ideal conditions or for others to take the initiative.

Transformative leadership can pave the way for collective progress, she said. However, national advancement requires all elements of society to work together.

“The people, civil society, business community, intellectuals, all elements of the nation, and state institutions must take responsibility in accordance with their respective roles,” Puan said.
