Acacia tree in EDSA Kamuning falls over due to strong winds, rain

QUEZON CITY, Philippines — An acacia tree along the Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (Edsa) – Kamuning southbound lane in Quezon City fell over on Tuesday due to strong winds and rain brought by the southwest monsoon, or “habagat.”
According to a member of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Metro Parkways Clearing Group (MMDA MPCG), the tree near the Quezon City Police Station 10 fell at around 5:30 a.m.
The MMDA crew, however, had to wait for assistance from Meralco as electricity cables were affected.

“If there weren’t electric posts hit, we could’ve worked on it already. But we couldn’t do that here because there’s an electrical hazard,” Reneboy Famin from the MPCG told the Inquirer.

Famin, one of the individuals cutting the tree, said engineers from Meralco didn’t arrive until 9:30 a.m.
Because of the tree’s size, he explained that they would have to cut it into smaller pieces.
He estimated that it may take until Wednesday to fully clear out the tree.
Meanwhile, Meralco has begun removing and replacing the electrical cables pulled down as the tree fell. /apl
