Most-played games range from Clair Obscur to Civ to Elden Ring to Halo 2 and beyond.

Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn saga has grown considerably since Vin's story began with The Final Empire two decades ago, expanding across two distinct eras while becoming one of the defining pillars of the larger Cosmere universe. The wait for its next major chapter will be a lengthy one, with the cyberpunk-inspired Mistborn: Ghostbloods trilogy currently scheduled to begin in December 2028 and continue annually through 2030.

Fortunately, Sanderson fans have plenty to keep them occupied in the meantime. His newest Cosmere novel, The Fires of December, recently began reaching crowdfunding backers, while Mistborn itself has just expanded into the Cosmere RPG, with its campaign setting receiving a September digital release ahead of its wider rollout. Now, Mistborn is preparing for another major release this November, and this time the beloved fantasy saga is heading in a completely different direction (via Zatu).

Mistborn Is Changing Genres When It Returns This Year

Mistborn is effectively changing genres with its newest release, trading Sanderson's sprawling fantasy prose for a much more hands-on form of storytelling. Mistborn: The Well of Ascension is an upcoming expansion for Brotherwise Games' Mistborn: The Deckbuilding Game, transforming the second novel of the original trilogy into a tabletop strategy experience built around cards, deck construction, and Allomantic combat.

It's not the first time Mistborn has ventured outside the books, especially after the original deck-building game and its recent expansion into the Cosmere RPG. However, The Well of Ascension offers a particularly direct genre shift by taking the events of an existing novel and asking players to actively navigate them.

The expansion introduces four new heroes, dual-metal cards, additional metals, and a new Coinshot ability that expands the competitive options from the base game. Perhaps more interestingly, a new solo and cooperative mode lets players experience the Siege of Luthadel, turning one of the novel's biggest conflicts into a playable scenario.

Designed by John D. Clair, The Well of Ascension is slated to reach retailers on November 18, 2026, with a suggested retail price of $24.99. Combined with the base game, it supports one to four players, with sessions expected to run around 30–60 minutes. For readers accustomed to experiencing Scadrial entirely through Sanderson's storytelling, it's an intriguing reversal, where instead of simply reading about Vin and the struggle for Luthadel, you now get to participate in it yourself.

Mistborn Arrives To The Cosmere RPG Soon As Well

Mistborn is also making its biggest tabletop role-playing push yet through the Cosmere RPG. Brotherwise Games' new Mistborn Campaign Setting expands the RPG beyond The Stormlight Archive, giving players the tools to create their own adventures on Scadrial across both major eras of Sanderson's saga. The digital edition launched publicly on September 9, while physical Kickstarter fulfillment is already underway ahead of a broader retail release expected in November 2026.

The centerpiece is the Mistborn Handbook, which contains the core rules for playing in the setting. It introduces eight new Heroic specialties, five Metalborn paths, and 34 Metallic Arts talent trees, alongside rules covering everything from Allomancy and Feruchemy to Hemalurgy. Players can also create characters with kandra and koloss-blooded ancestries and make use of setting-appropriate additions such as firearms.

The release is considerably bigger than a single sourcebook, too, accompanied by the Mistborn World Guide and Mistborn Legacy, the first full campaign-length adventure for the setting. Legacy spans both Era 1 and Era 2, following two interconnected parties and stories across nine chapters. Combined with The Well of Ascension expansion arriving around the same time, November is shaping up to be an unusually big month for Mistborn fans who want to experience Scadrial somewhere other than the novels.
