MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health is closely monitoring developments in Russia involving the death of a laboratory technician at a plague research institute, as well as recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO).

The DOH said it is prepared to respond should additional measures become necessary, citing a recent evaluation that affirmed the country’s capacity to meet the requirements of the International Health Regulations.

“The Bureau of Quarantine is ensuring that travelers are appropriately screened and that vector surveillance for rodents and rodent fleas on incoming cargo and vessels is strictly implemented. We will keep everyone apprised should additional measures become warranted,” DOH said on Tuesday.

Malacañang yesterday gave assurance that health authorities are monitoring developments.

The DOH response comes after the WHO said the risk of an epidemic in Russia remained low following the death of Darya Shipilova, 28, who worked at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute in Siberia. – Alexis Romero
