Charlie Hunnam Reveals How Sons of Anarchy Spinoff Legends Came to Life
Charlie Hunnam is trying to enjoy the simple moments in life.
After taking on the role of Lizzie Borden’s father Andrew Borden in the new Ryan Murphy Netflix series Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, the Emmy nominee is looking forward to taking time and watching the show with longtime girlfriend Morgana McNelis, just like they did for his 2025 installation Monster: The Ed Gein Story.
“We had such a nice time last year,” Hunnam told E! News’ Will Marfuggi in an exclusive interview. “We sat down and watched the whole thing in a day and binged it together.”
“It was such a fun day,” the 46-year-old continued, although he wasn’t sure if “nice and fun” were actually the right words to use. “It was a day to remember, so we're gonna do that again.”
And thankfully, this time Hunnam wasn’t tasked with bringing a killer to life, instead playing the victim of an axe murderer. The real-life Lizzie Borden (Ella Beatty) was accused of killing both her father (Hunnam) and her stepmother (Rebecca Hall) in 1892, though she was ultimately acquitted at trial.
“There was a lot less responsibility, obviously,” Hunnam explained. “You feel the weight of it, having to carry one of these shows. They swing for the fences with the drama and the emotion. And so it takes a lot. So, I was very happy to be here in support of Ella this time.”
The actor added, “It didn't feel like I needed the same space to exorcize this from my being in the way that it felt like I needed some time to let go of Ed.”

The role also likely came as a relief to McNelis, who had her own request for Hunnam when it came to playing serial killer Gein: leave the character and especially the voice at work.
"I was slipping in and out of it all the time," Hunnam shared with E! News in January. "And she would say, 'Dude, you have to stop at the voice. At breakfast, it's a little too much.'"
The request followed a similar rule that McNelis laid out for her partner of nearly two decades in regards to the roles he would take.

“She got frustrated with me showing up and being a bit of a shell after doing a role,” Hunnam recalled to E! in October. “So, she said to me, probably about 10 years ago, ‘Here's the rules of engagement: Go do your work. Be as selfish as you need to be, but then take some time, because when you get back, you better be ready to see me.’ Which is completely fair and really lovely.”
Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story premieres on Netflix Sept. 17.
