Anya Taylor-Joy sets out to fulfill a prophecy in wild new images from Netflix's Sacrifice.
The provocative satirical thriller film follows insecure movie star Mike Tyler (Chris Evans), who attempts to revive his career after a humiliating public meltdown that went viral. His public comeback is meant to begin with a black-tie environmental gala hosted by a billionaire entrepreneur (Vincent Cassel) and his wife (Salma Hayek Pinault), but the event is violently upended and becomes a hostage crisis thanks to Joan (Taylor-Joy) and her radical group who believe they must carry out a volcanic prophecy to cleanse the Earth.
Netflix has now released new images from Sacrifice, which include Joan standing beside her allies, a panicked Mike being photographed, Joan dramatically pointing a finger at something, Cassel's billionaire character looking at his wife, a group of first responders and characters played by Ambika Mod and Sam Richardson being held hostage, Charli XCX singing, and John Malkovich being flanked by two men. This is the English-language debut for Romain Gevras, who previously directed the French action drama movie Athena, which has a "Certified Fresh" 88% critics' score from 66 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Prior to Athena, he directed numerous videos, including "Born for Free" by M.I.A, "Stress" for Justice, and the Grammy Award-nominated “Gosh” by Jamie xx. Gavras co-wrote Sacrifice with Succession writer Will Arbery, and the movie was filmed in multiple locations across Greece, including a volcano in Santorini and a marble quarry in the city of Volakas.
After premiering at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, it debuted with a 37% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes. In ScreenRant's Sacrifice review, Mae Adbulbaki gave it a rating of four out of 10 stars and described the film as "messy, strange, and somewhat baffling" while being "elevated by a fantastic cast," including a "wildly funny" performance from Evans.
Ahead of Sacrifice's October 16 release on Netflix in the U.S. and France, Taylor-Joy is coming off an eventful year that includes voicing Princess Peach in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the first movie released in 2026 to pass $1 billion at the worldwide box office, and she played the titular character in Apple TV's seven-episode miniseries Lucky.
After Sacrifice, Taylor-Joy also has another 2026 release in December with Dune: Part Three, where she plays Alia Atreides after first playing the character in Dune: Part Two. As for Evans, he is reprising his role of Steve Rogers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Avengers: Doomsday, which opens in theaters on December 18, the same day as Dune: Part Three in what has already been widely dubbed as "Dunesday."
