Helen Haines has lost both legs after alleged attack but ‘her heart and mind are in good shape’, husband says

Helen Haines has lost both legs but remains in a stable condition, her husband has confirmed.
Haines, the federal MP for Indi in Victoria’s north-east, had been in a critical but stable condition after the accident. Surgeons were trying to save one of her legs, but both had to be amputated due to her injuries.
At the Alfred hospital on Wednesday, Haines’ husband Phil confirmed to the media that Haines was receiving ongoing care on Wednesday afternoon.
Phil Haines was joined by the governor-general Sam Mostyn during a short update to the media.
“We are grateful at this stage that both her heart and her mind are in good shape,” Phil Haines said.
Haines, 65, was hit by car outside her Wangaratta office on Monday.
Police allege the attack was targeted, and have charged Brendan Nugent with dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury and the Commonwealth offence of causing harm to a Commonwealth public official.
Nugent faced Wangaratta magistrates court earlier on Wednesday.
