Canada extends condolences to those affected by MV June Aster fire

The Canadian government has issued a statement expressing condolences to the families of the victims of the MV June Aster fire.

"Canada extends its deepest condolences to all those affected by the tragic fire on board a ferry off the coast of Coron, Philippines," according to the statement posted by the Embassy of Canada in the Philippines.

"We recognize the ongoing efforts of emergency responders and stand in solidarity with the people of the Philippines. At this time, no Canadian citizens are known to have been affected," it added.

Five persons have been reported dead, while 42 others have been rescued after a passenger ship carrying more than 100 passengers from Manila caught fire in waters off Coron on Wednesday night.

As of Thursday, authorities are still locating around 87 individuals following the fire that broke out on a passenger vessel bound for Coron, Palawan, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said.

Of the 134 people on board, 117 were passengers and 17 were crew members, according to the PCG. — BAP, GMA News
