Indonesia records highest-ever rice stock at 4.56 million tons

The Indonesian government has reached a record-high national rice stock of 4.56 million tons, driven by efforts to strengthen food reserves during President Prabowo Subianto’s two-year administration.
"Our stock in October is at 4.56 million tons, the highest in history. It once reached as high as 5.7 million tons," Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman said, as quoted from a statement on Friday.
According to him, the national food security remains strong through July next year, supported by reserve stocks across various sectors and a projected rice harvest of 10 million tons.
Besides ensuring the availability of staple foods nationally, the government continues to improve the welfare of farmers through a policy of adjusting fertilizer prices by 20 percent and increasing the Government Purchase Price (HPP) for unhusked rice.
Sulaiman said this positive achievement has contributed to macroeconomic stability, recording agricultural Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth of 5.74 percent, along with a drastic increase in export value to Rp166 trillion (US$9.1 billion) and a decline in food imports.
As a long-term strategy to meet the food needs of 500 million people in the future, his office has outlined plans to develop two million hectares of mineral land, beginning with 500,000 hectares in phases.
Agricultural authorities are also tightening price monitoring after chicken and egg prices fell at the farm level but rose sharply for consumers, Sulaiman added.
"Consumer prices have increased above the highest retail price, indicating an anomaly. We have sent a letter to the National Police Chief demanding that anyone involved in this activity be prosecuted," he emphasized.
The ministry is committed to cracking down on food trade violations, including pursuing legal action over the sale of fortified premium rice at prices as high as Rp56,000 (US$3.09) per kilogram to protect consumers.
