Rosalía used the platform of the WSJ. Magazine’s Innovator Awards to speak for those whose lives were lost in Spain’s shocking train crash.

The pop star’s homeland has entered a three-day period of mourning, after 69 people were killed in a high-speed rail collision, the second this year in Spain.

“Sending my condolences to all the people affected by the accident that recently occurred in my country,” Rosalía said from the podium at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, speaking Spanish. “There was a train accident and there were many victims. And the truth is that I would like to send all my love and support to each and every person affected by it.”

The crash, one of the deadliest train disasters in Europe this century, occurred in the central region of Castilla La Mancha on Wednesday morning, Oct. 28. The nation’s prime minister Pedro Sanchez has promised a full and thorough investigation.

“We are working day and night not only to support the victims’ families, but also to establish every last detail of this tragedy and strengthen safety measures to ensure it never happens again,” he told reporters.

Launched in 2011, WSJ. Magazine’s Innovator Awards recognize groundbreaking talents from a range of disciplines, including fashion, art, literature, entertainment, architecture, design, technology, music, philanthropy, cuisine and more.

Hailing from Catalonia, Rosalía was honored Thursday night (Oct. 29) as this year’s Music Innovator, nabbing the top honor just days after collecting multiple Billboard Latin Music Awards, including the Billboard Hall of Fame Award.

With most recent project, 2025’s LUX (2025), Rosalía landed her first Billboard 200 top 10, debuting at No. 4. The album represents her most ambitious effort to date and features 13 different languages, and topped No. 1 on five Billboard charts: Top Latin Albums, Top Latin Pop Albums, Classical Albums, Classical Crossover and World Albums. Rosalía recently concluded her LUX Tour, completing 57 sold-out dates.

Guests at the WSJ-branded event included Dua Lipa, Ciara, Cara Delevingne, and A$AP Rocky.
