SEREMBAN: An elderly couple died after the car they were travelling in skidded into a drain at KM242 of the southbound North-South Expressway (PLUS) Saturday afternoon.

Rembau police chief Superintendent Ngiam Ooi Ming said the 75-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, while his 70-year-old wife died while receiving treatment at Tuanku Ja'afar Hospital at 8pm.

"Preliminary investigations found that the Proton Saga carrying the couple was driven by a 20-year-old man, with another passenger, a 21-year-old woman. They were travelling from Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, to Port Dickson.

"On reaching the scene, a group of motorcyclists riding in convoy are believed to have overtaken and suddenly moved into the car's path, causing it to lose control and skid into a drain on the left side of the highway," he said in a statement tonight.

Ngiam said the female passenger was seriously injured and receiving treatment at Rembau Hospital, while the driver was unhurt.

Police are investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and are tracing the group of motorcyclists believed to have been at the scene.

Ngiam also urged members of the public who witnessed the incident or have dashcam footage to contact the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division at the Rembau police headquarters to assist with the investigation.
