One person taken to hospital after fire breaks out in York Hotel kitchen

SINGAPORE – A person was taken to hospital after a fire broke out at a hotel near Orchard Road on the morning of Aug 24.

In response to queries, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the fire at 21 Mount Elizabeth, which is the address of York Hotel, at about 4am that day.

The fire involved contents of a kitchen on the second floor of the building, SCDF said, adding that the fire was put out with a fire extinguisher.

One person was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

A video of the incident uploaded to Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu shows the hotel lobby shrouded in a thin veil of smoke.

A fire truck is seen parked outside the hotel, while police and SCDF personnel attend to the incident.

Dozens of people who appear to be hotel guests are also seen standing outside the hotel.

An evacuated hotel guest told Chinese-language daily Lianhe Zaobao that an announcement was made over the hotel’s loudspeaker at about 4am, instructing guests to evacuate the building.

He said he could smell smoke when he reached the lobby, but the smell dissipated quickly after the situation was dealt with.

He added that hotel staff provided drinking water to some guests during the evacuation, and informed all guests that breakfast service was free of charge that morning.
