LTFRB probes fatal jeepney crash after ‘overtaking spree’ in Rizal


MANILA, Philippines — An investigation on a fatal road crash in San Mateo, Rizal – after a jeepney reportedly went on an “overtaking spree” – has begun, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) announced on Sunday.
According to the LTFRB, the incident that killed a female rider occurred on Thursday, August 20.
“The driver was reported to have engaged in an overtaking spree and occupied the opposite line until he was unable to avoid the motorcycle driven by a 43-year old female rider,” the LTFRB reported.

“Based on the initial investigation of the local police, the driver of a passenger jeepney, with license plate TWS 560, was speeding off the vehicle in an attempt to pick up more passengers,” it added.

The victim was taken to the hospital but due to serious injuries following the collision, she died, the LTFRB said.
Following the incident, a show-cause order was issued by the board against the jeepney operator.
The operator was also ordered to surrender the vehicle’s license plate.

The operator’s franchise may be revoked for employing a reckless driver.
The operation of the jeepney has also been placed under a 30-day suspension.

“We are saddened by this unfortunate incident and we, in the LTFRB, extend our deepest condolences to the family of the rider,” LTFRB Acting Chairman Greg Pua expressed.
“We assure the family that we will expedite the investigation into this case in the interest of accountability and justice,” he added. /apl
