Ajayi leads Hull City’s tight defence against Blues’ scoring threat

Semi Ajayi and Hull City face their toughest test of the Premier League season so far when they travel to Stamford Bridge on Saturday (today) to take on a Chelsea side that have scored more goals than any other team in the EPL this season, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

While Chelsea have been prolific in attack, they have also conceded in each of their opening three league games.

Hull, meanwhile, are yet to concede a goal since their promotion from the Championship, setting up an intriguing clash between the league’s most potent attack and its tightest defence.

Ajayi has started all three of Hull’s league matches, playing 244 minutes and scoring in their opening-day 2-0 victory over Manchester United.

The 32-year-old has been central to Hull’s impressive start, helping Sergej Jakirovic’s side keep clean sheets against Manchester United, Coventry City and Aston Villa.

The Tigers have seven points from three matches and sit third, one place above Chelsea on goal difference.

Chelsea have scored eight goals in their opening three games under Xabi Alonso but have conceded seven, highlighting the defensive vulnerability behind their attacking threat.

They opened with a 3-2 win at Fulham before beating Brighton 4-3 at home after surrendering a three-goal lead. They then suffered a 2-1 defeat at Arsenal in Matchweek 3.

Hull have taken a contrasting approach, using a compact 5-4-1 formation to frustrate opponents. Their 2-0 victory over Manchester United was followed by a 1-0 win at Coventry before they held Aston Villa to a goalless draw.

The challenge for Ajayi and his teammates will be containing Chelsea’s attacking quality, with Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro and Morgan Rogers capable of rotating positions and creating openings.

Palmer has been the creative fulcrum of Alonso’s side, scoring twice and providing one assist in three league appearances while registering 12 shots.

Joao Pedro has also made an impressive start, contributing two goals and two assists, and his movement and aerial threat could test Hull’s back line.

Ajayi’s aerial ability could prove equally important at the other end. The Nigerian defender scored a headed set-piece goal against Manchester United and will provide Hull with an additional threat from dead-ball situations.

Hull have undoubtedly been the surprise package of the new Premier League season and are remarkably the only team across the top-four tiers of English football who are yet to concede a single league goal.

The Tigers will also endeavour to claim their first-ever league victory away against Chelsea, having never won in 18 visits to the blue side of West London (D3 L15), the most the Tigers have faced any opponent on the road in any of the top-four divisions without winning.

Chelsea’s attacking firepower makes them favourites at Stamford Bridge, but their failure to keep a clean sheet in any of their opening three league games offers Hull encouragement.
