Grand Theft Auto has come a long way in its roughly 30-year history. It began with in-universe representations of New York City, San Francisco, and Miami, then expanded to 3D worlds based on those locales in GTA 3, San Andreas, and Vice City, respectively. Now we're set to go back to Vice City in GTA 6.
But what about a game that spanned multiple continents? That might be too ambitious, even for Rockstar. Speaking to Bloomberg, multiple developers at Rockstar discussed the challenges they faced developing Grand Theft Auto 6 and publicly acknowledged the longstanding rumors about "Project Americas" and what it became.
Speaking to Bloomberg, Rockstar development lead Rob Nelson briefly discussed the existence of "Project Americas," a massive game that would have spanned both North and South America. This was retooled into GTA 6, which allegedly pushed the game back a few years as the scope was revisited.
Nelson also had a lot of legwork to do. Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser left the company after the development of Red Dead Redemption 2, and Nelson needed to step up and wear a lot more hats during GTA 6. Here's what Nelson says about the process:
"Trying to keep a team together through that is really challenging. I can imagine how I would feel if I was sitting somewhere in a studio and looking at this thing day after day and seeing it not come together and starting to go, ‘Is it ever going to come together? It is OK...we’re going to get through it."
Clearly, GTA 6 was cut from Project Americas in the finished version, leaving only the greater Vice City area. But it's fascinating to see what Rockstar has in store for fans behind the scenes, and the scale they're working with.
As technology advances and GTA 6 makes boatloads of cash, Rockstar could revisit the idea again one day, even if it just spanned one continent. Plus, fans are eager to see what a GTA outside of America and London looks like.
In the same interview, artist Aaron Garbut also addresses the massive leaks.: “It feels like somebody’s wading through your dirty washing...It’s like they’re inside your head. You see your early work out there. Nobody’s ever supposed to see that. It’s really weirdly invasive. And so it’s quite hard to deal with on an emotional level.”
Despite all that, Grand Theft Auto 6 is nearly here, and it's set to arrive in November. We're past the failsafe point where yet another delay could be viable, and all of those years of hard work are about to pay off for all the Rockstar developers involved.
