10 Powerful Mutant Superheroes Who Never Actually Joined The X-Men

For decades, the X-Men have stood as Marvel’s most famous team of mutants, backed by powerhouses like Storm, Jean Grey, Magneto, and more. However, despite the team’s prominence, there are powerful mutants who have never officially joined the team. Some of them instead worked with other teams such as the Avengers, Fantastic Four, or other teams, while others work alongside the X-Men without ever joining their ranks.

The reasons behind not becoming an official part of the team range from personal choices to real-life retcons that completely altered the trajectory of the characters. Either way, these superheroes have proven themselves with their power, intellect, tactical brilliance, and much more, making them well deserving of recognition, even though they never joined Marvel’s most famous team of mutants.

Scarlet Witch

Wanda Maximoff was introduced alongside her twin brother, Pietro, in Uncanny X-Men #4 as a member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Her abilities have evolved in the decades since her original debut, turning her into one of Marvel’s most powerful superheroes despite her origins as a reluctant villain.

When given the chance, she and her brother abandoned the Brotherhood, and Wanda went on to join the Avengers in The Avengers #16. In the mid-2010s, Marvel retconned her origins, revealing that she wasn’t a mutant and Magneto was not her father. However, before that, she was considered a mutant for decades, yet never officially joined the X-Men.

Quicksilver

Pietro Maximoff shares a backstory with his sister, Wanda, as the two entered Marvel in the same comic and were part of the same group. Similar to Scarlet Witch, Pietro reluctantly served as a villain due to a life debt owed to Magneto for saving them from a mob before leaving the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants when Magneto disappeared.

After he and Wanda left the antagonistic group, both Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch were given the opportunity to join the X-Men, but they both declined, choosing instead to become Avengers. Like Scarlet Witch, his origins as a mutant were retconned decades after his introduction.

Franklin Richards

As the son of Reed Richards (Mister Fantastic) and Sue Storm (Invisible Woman), Franklin Richards grew up surrounded by some of Marvel’s greatest heroes and would grow up to become someone far more extraordinary. With his reality-warping powers, Franklin has the ability to manipulate matter, energy, space, and time itself, making him an extremely valuable superhero.

Over the course of the comics, Franklin has aligned himself with the X-Men on more than one occasion, but never officially joined their team. Despite Professor Xavier’s interest and his classification as an Omega-level mutant for decades, Franklin’s primary allegiance has remained with his family in the Fantastic Four. That said, in 2020, a major retcon revealed that he subconsciously created his own X-gene, meaning he was never truly a mutant.

X-Man (Nate Grey)

Nate Grey comes from a dystopian timeline called the Age of Apocalypse and was genetically engineered by Mister Sinister using the genetic material of Scott Summers (Cyclops) and Jean Grey. As the alternate-reality counterpart of Cable, Nate possessed a massive concentration of psychic power without the techno-organic virus that limited his counterpart.

Despite his codename being X-Man, Nate Grey never actually joined the famous team. At various points, he was allied with them, but for the most part, he remained an outsider from another reality who refused to stay at the X Institute in order to find his own path.

Deadpool (Eleanor Camacho)

Eleanor “Ellie” Camacho is the daughter of Carmelita Camacho and Wade Wilson, who was initially unaware of her existence until she and her mother were used as leverage against him. While Deadpool was able to save Ellie, her mother was tragically killed, leaving Ellie under the protection of S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Emily Preston, who was assigned to keep her safe.

Unlike her father, Ellie is a true mutant who inherited the accelerated healing factor and has a hyper-receptive learning ability to top it off. While Wade wanted to keep her away from the world of superheroes and villains, she would later go on to take up the mantle as Deadpool. However, despite her status as a mutant, she never had the opportunity to officially join the X-Men.

Molly Hayes

Molly Hayes was only 11 when she discovered that her parents were members of the criminal group, The Pride, and that she herself was a powerful mutant. Molly, along with other kids who discovered their parents were part of the evil group, fled their homes and formed the Runaways to put a stop to their parents’ evil crime syndicate.

While Molly has always looked up to the X-Men as heroes, she never joined the team, despite having multiple opportunities to do so. Her loyalty to the Runaways outweighed the appeal of joining another superhero team, leading to her remaining with her chosen family who helped her escape the life her parents had planned for her.

Mister M

Absolon Zebardyn Mercator, better known as Mister M, is among Marvel’s most powerful Omega-level mutants who can manipulate matter and energy at the subatomic level. After he accidentally killed a bully with his power as a child, he completely withdrew from society before eventually settling in Mutant Town, where he lived quietly despite his ultra-powerful abilities.

Mister M has lived at the X Institute and served as a powerful protector to other mutants, yet he never officially joined the team, preferring to maintain his distance from such matters. During the Krakoa era, Mister M declined the invitation and instead accepted an offer from Apocalypse to enter Otherworld, where he took over an entire province and named it Mercator, turning it into a place where he could live on his own terms.

Justice

Vance Astrovik initially went by Marvel Boy before adopting the codename Justice. His mutant powers include telekinetic abilities, and he stands as a founding member of the New Warriors before eventually becoming a full-fledged member of the Avengers after proving himself to be a worthy and capable leader.

Despite being a mutant and the fact that his fiancée, Firestar, had historical ties to the X-Men, he never joined the team or had much direct interaction with the team. Justice primarily remained rooted in the New Warriors and the Avengers, taking a much different path in comparison to many of Xavier’s students.

Darkstar

Laynia Petrovna was raised by the Soviet state alongside her twin brother, Vanguard. Her ability to manipulate Darkforce energy grants her the power to fly, teleport, create weapons and shields, and unleash powerful blasts. Paired with her extensive combat training, she is easily among one of the most versatile and formidable mutants.

Darkstar never became an X-Man largely due to her strong national allegiance, instead becoming a member of the Soviet Super-Soldiers and later the Winter Guard. While she eventually joined the Paris branch of X-Corporation and has worked alongside the X-Men, Darkstar never felt it necessary to officially join the team.

Persuasion

Kara Killgrave is the daughter of the Purple Man, Zebediah Killgrave, a notorious mind-controlling villain. When her mutant abilities began manifesting, turning her skin purple and granting her pheromone-based mind control, she ran away from home and was subsequently rescued by Alpha Flight, beginning her superhero career as Purple Girl before eventually going by Persuasion.

Over time, she began to develop more advanced telepathic abilities, allowing her to sense emotions and link minds. Unlike many other mutants drawn to Xavier’s school, Kara found a home in Canada’s Department H programs, which never gave her a reason to seek a new team until she joined the Thunderbolts.
