Marra PL. Lanot, titan of Philippine literature, dies at 82

MANILA, Philippines — Multi-awarded titan of Philippine literature Marra PL. Lanot died on August 16 at the age of 82.
In a social media post, the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) honored Lanot as an advocate for culture and the arts who championed gender sensitivity, artistic integrity, and responsible media consumption.

Lanot served as an MTRCB board member under the administrations of Presidents Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and Benigno Aquino III.

She is survived by her husband, former MTRCB Vice Chairperson, award-winning screenwriter and journalist Jose “Pete” Lacaba; her son, Kris; three grandchildren; and two siblings.
“The MTRCB extends its sincerest sympathies to her family, friends, and loved ones, and pays tribute to her years of selfless service to the public and her commitment to Philippine culture and the arts,” the post read.
“May her dedication to excellence, artistic advocacy, and integrity continue to inspire future generations of Filipinos,” it also said.
Lanot’s first poetry collection, Sheaves of Things Burning, won second prize at the 1967 Palanca Awards. In 1980, she won first prize for her essay Deja Vu in America: Or, One of the Songs.
Her other published works include Passion and Compassion: Mga Tula sa Ingles at Pilipino (1981), Riding the Full Moon and Other Poems in Filipino and Spanish (2008), and Cadena de Amor: New and Selected Poems in English, Filipino, and Spanish (2017). /mcm
