News24 | Cars submerged in waterlogged roads as heavy rains pelt Joburg

Torrential rain in Johannesburg has left some motorists stranded in their vehicles in Siemert Road and Currey Street in Doornfontein in the inner city.

In a statement on Sunday afternoon, Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla said multiple vehicles had become submerged in water on parts of these roads.

This comes after persistent heavy rainfall in Johannesburg and parts of Gauteng has caused localised flooding.

Fihla said JMPD officers were at the scene managing traffic flow, assisting stranded motorists, and diverting vehicles away from the flooded road.

“Motorists heading toward these locations are being diverted onto alternative routes. Avoid the area entirely where possible,” Fihla said.

Motorists were stranded in their cars after a torrential downpour in the Johannesburg CBD on Sunday.

He further warned that motorists must “turn around immediately” if they encounter submerged roads or high-standing water. Vehicles stalled at the scene can block emergency response access and are a safety hazard.

“Drive well below the speed limit, maintain an extended following distance, and keep the headlights switched on. Follow all temporary barricades, road closures, and instructions from JMPD officers directing traffic on site,” he cautioned.

Fihla instructed road users to report stranded vehicles, dangerous obstructions, or rising water levels to the City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Call Centre.
