Nobody in Kansas City says it loudly, but everyone feels it. Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce could be playing their last stretch together. Kelce is 37, newly married and wearing three Super Bowl rings. He has not announced a retirement, yet the quarterback clearly knows the clock is ticking. On Wednesday, October 21, Mahomes told reporters why their bond works so well. The Chiefs sit at 5-0, and the pair look hungry for one more title run.
Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce chemistry: how it started
The partnership began in training camp, during Mahomes' first year as the starter. A young quarterback usually leans on the veteran. This time the veteran asked the questions.
"It started in training camp that first year I was starting. After every series he would ask me what I was seeing, why I wanted to throw it here,” Mahomes said. “Through those conversations, I started understanding what he was seeing. Now he's able to do a lot of freelancing in the offense because we are on the same page.”
Think about what that means on a Sunday. A defense shows an odd look, and Kelce changes his route on the fly. He does not guess. He trusts Mahomes will read the same picture a split second later. Few pairs in the league get there, and it takes years of honest conversation, not just talent.
Travis Kelce stats this season: still producing at 37
Age has not slowed Kelce much. He leads Kansas City in receiving yards with 20 catches for 299 yards and two touchdowns. That is the top mark on a team that has not lost yet.
The bigger picture is even louder. Kelce owns 1,100 receptions, 13,301 receiving yards and 84 touchdowns across his career. He is an 11-time Pro Bowler. Hall of Fame voters will have little to debate.
He is also not carrying the offense alone, which helps. Running back Kenneth Walker III arrived this offseason and now leads the NFL with 665 rushing yards after six weeks. He did it while playing one fewer game than many rivals. A strong run game forces defenses to respect the ground, and that opens space for Kelce and Mahomes to work underneath and over the middle.
The Chiefs returned from their Week 5 bye with a win over the Los Angeles Chargers at Arrowhead Stadium. Up next is a trip down a very familiar road for Walker. The Seattle Seahawks, his old team, visit on Sunday, October 25.
