Emmys 2026: Our Prediction For Who Will Win Lead Actress In A Comedy Series

Last year's winner Jean Smart is joined by four talented performers in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series race at the 2026 Emmys.

The Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series race at the 2026 Emmys is officially on, with the most recent winner joined by two of last year's returning nominees, a veteran comedy actress, and one buzzy newcomer. The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony will air Monday, September 14, and I'll be covering the major comedy categories in the lead-up to the big day.

The 2026 Emmy nominees for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series include last year's Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary), Ayo Edebiri (The Bear), and winner Jean Smart (Hacks), along with Elle Fanning (Margo's Got Money Troubles) and Lisa Kudrow (The Comeback). If Smart wins again, she'll officially break an Emmys record, but let's see how she stacks up against her competitors.

5. Ayo Edebiri – The Bear as Sydney Adamu (FX)

Ayo Edebiri has received a career total of five Emmy nominees, all for FX's The Bear — four for acting and one for directing. She won her only award for The Bear season 1, when she competed in the supporting actress category. She has since moved to lead actress and has lost the award each time.

The Bear came in hot with its first season, winning every major comedy category it was nominated for. However, the show has since fallen out of favor with the Television Academy — along with critics and general audiences — as its increasingly somber tone has turned off many voters, who question why The Bear keeps nominating itself as a comedy.

After no wins last year, several of The Bear's repeat acting nominees were left off the Emmys docket this year, notably past winners Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, with Edebiri remaining the show's representative in the major acting categories. Though her performance as chef Sydney Adamu is consistently praised as a high point of the show, too many voters have written The Bear off for her to be considered a real contender.

4. Quinta Brunson – Abbott Elementary as Janine Teagues (ABC)

As the creator, writer, and star of ABC's Abbott Elementary, Quinta Brunson wears many hats — and she also scores many Emmy nods. Most of her nominations have been for Abbott, including three this year for producing, writing, and acting in the show, along with one guest actress nod in 2023 for hosting SNL. Of her 15 total Emmy nominations, Brunson has won twice, one for writing Abbott Elementary ​​​​​​in 2022, and one for her performance as Janine Teagues in 2023.

Unlike The Bear, Abbott Elementary has maintained its reputation as a strong, genuinely funny comedy series. Though Abbott scored seven nominations at the 2026 Emmys vs. The Bear's eight, the former has a stronger showing in the acting categories. Along with Brunson, her co-stars Janelle James and Tyler James Williams also received nominations.

However, despite the goodwill toward Abbott Elementary, its awards shine has faded over time and, barring a major shakeup, will likely have to settle for being a reliable also-ran throughout the rest of its run. The same rule applies to Brunson in the acting category, though nobody would call her an undeserving winner should a major upset happen.

3. Elle Fanning – Margo's Got Money Troubles as Margo Millet (Apple TV)

Elle Fanning received two 2026 Emmy nods for Margo's Got Money Troubles — one for her performance as single mom/OnlyFans content creator Margo Millet and one for producing the Apple TV series. She was previously nominated for her role in Hulu's The Great, making for a total of three Primetime Emmy nominations throughout her career.

Margo's Got Money Troubles premiered to a radiant reception in April, with critics praising the performances of Fanning and her co-stars, Michelle Pfeiffer and Nick Offerman, as "Emmy-worthy". Indeed, all three received acting nominations, and the show itself is up for Outstanding Comedy Series.

Margo's Got Money Troubles is the only new show in the lead actress category, and while this can generate a certain amount of advantageous buzz, it's not enough to give Fanning the edge this year. She may have had a better shot in the limited series category, but with Margo's Got Money Troubles renewed for season 2, it's officially a full-fledged comedy series, and Fanning simply can't beat the support for comedy legends Lisa Kudrow and Jean Smart.

2. Lisa Kudrow – The Comeback as Valerie Cherish (HBO)

Veteran TV actress Lisa Kudrow is back in her beloved role as Valerie Cherish. In addition to a lead actress Emmy nomination, Kudrow also received a writing nod for The Comeback. In total, Kudrow has earned 17 Emmy nominations, winning once for Friends in 1998.

Though arguably the least mainstream of any series in this category, HBO's The Comeback is beloved by both critics and the entertainment industry. The Comeback season 3 premiered over a decade after its second season, so the fact that it made enough of a splash to score two nominations for Kudrow speaks volumes about the Television Academy's admiration for both the series and its lead actress.

This also being The Comeback's final season is an advantage for Kudrow, as the Academy is more inclined to vote for a performer in an esteemed series when it's their last chance. Granted, Kudrow's stiffest competition is Jean Smart, who's also starring in the final season of her show. Some voters may think that Smart has been given her due, having won for Hacks four times while Kudrow has never been awarded for The Comeback. It's not likely, but if there's going to be an upset in this category, it'll be a win for Kudrow.

1. Jean Smart – Hacks as Deborah Vance (HBO Max)

The heavy favorite in this year's Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series race, Jean Smart is nominated for her role as iconic comedian Deborah Vance in HBO Max's Hacks. Smart has a career total of 15 nominations, having won the award seven times, with an aforementioned four wins for Hacks.

With a whopping 24 nods, Hacks was the second-most nominated show at the 2026 Emmys — behind only The Pitt's 25 — the Television Academy clearly wants to honor Hacks' fifth and final season. Alongside Smart and Hannah Einbinder, Hacks' Paul W. Downs and Megan Stalter received first-time acting nominations for their roles. Hacks also, unsurprisingly, scored a nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series, where it's in a heated race against Widow's Bay.

However, Smart has a straighter shot at the gold. On top of this being her final outing as Deborah Vance, this nomination is special because, should Smart win her eighth award, she would tie Cloris Leachman and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as having the most Emmy wins for a performer.

Perhaps even more excitingly, a win for Smart at the 2026 Emmys would see her become the only female performer to win for every season of her show in Emmys history, a record Louis-Dreyfus just missed when she lost for the final season of Veep. We'll see if Smart gets the glory on September 14 — but it's a safe bet she will.
