Crew Girl future confirmed by Netflix as "drama-filled" season 2 officially announced

Get ready for some more romance and rowing, as Netflix has confirmed that hit Canadian series Crew Girl will return for a second season.

The eight-part teen drama, which launched on 10 September, follows the story of 16-year-old Teagan Tao (Miku Martineau), who is forced to relocate to the East Coast with her mother Ella (Mad Men's Jessica Paré) following a family scandal.

In her hometown, Teagan was a rising star in single sculls rowing, but at her new prep school there is no girls' rowing team so the only way she can compete is by joining the boys' varsity crew as their coxswain.

Of course, the boys' team doesn't really want her, and while she juggles their demands and her complicated home life, she also finds herself torn between two boys – arrogant team captain Josh (Sam Braun) and the quiet but driven Cam (Kyle Clark).

“I am beyond excited for Crew Girl season 2," Martineau said following the renewal announcement. "There’s so much left to explore with the characters, the romances, and the rowing team, it’s going to be a ride for sure!

"All I know is that it will definitely be a packed, juicy, drama-filled second season so I’m ready to get back in a boat and on camera! #teamteagan"

There is certainly lots to explore in the second season that should stream next year. By the end of the first season, Teagan had not definitively chosen between the two boys, and matters were further complicated by the revelation that Josh had been diagnosed with a heart condition, hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, that could force him off the rowing team.

"I truly go back and forth," writer and showrunner Vivian Lin told Tudum about Teagan's love triangle. "You can see where the relationships fall short, where it gets messy. I'm team messy."

Martineau also teased what could happen between Teagan, Josh and Cam, saying: "I think she's still going to be figuring it out. Who knows what could happen in season 2? A love square – is that even possible?"

Teagan also faces a tough decision following an offer to row on a girls' team at another school, and season 2 could have her trying to juggle her own rowing ambitions with her commitments to the boys' team.

"We’re going to have to wait to find out," Martineau said about whether Teagan decides to join the girls' boat. "She has such an attachment to the boys' team, but she's also in the pursuit of her own rowing career, and singles are her passion. It's going to be hard to decide."
