#SHOWBIZ: Ex-TVB star Margaret Chung admitted to ICU, requests privacy during 'arduous period'

HONG KONG: Former TVB actress Margaret Chung was rushed to the intensive care unit (ICU) at the Chinese University of Hong Kong Medical Centre on Sept 11 following a sudden medical emergency.

According to Hong Kong media, the 49-year-old Canadian-born actress, who is based in Hong Kong, drew concern after her close friend, singer-actress Toby Leung, and several other friends were spotted waiting anxiously outside the ICU.

In a statement posted on Instagram, Chung—who left the entertainment industry years ago to work as a yoga instructor and raise a family—confirmed she is going through an "arduous period" and is focusing entirely on her recovery. She did not reveal the details of her illness.

"At this time, my focus is on my health, being with the people I love and spending meaningful time with my family as we navigate this together," she wrote.

Chung thanked everyone who reached out with prayers, encouragement, and well wishes, while asking for privacy as she heals.

"I hope everyone will understand our wish for privacy while allowing us the time and space to focus on one another. Thank you for your understanding, compassion and respect," she added.

On Sept 12, Leung—who was seen bringing takeaway food to the hospital—reassured fans that Chung was doing well. Another close friend, actress Sherming Yiu, also promised to stand by her side.

Chung, Leung, and Yiu belong to a close-knit group of former TVB stars who bonded in the 2000s, alongside Charmaine Sheh, Angela Tong, Janet Chow, and Annie Man.

"Our group of friends will be by her side to support and accompany her. We hope everyone can give her a little more space," Yiu said.

Health concerns surrounding Chung first arose after photos from Janet Chow's recent birthday party showed she had lost a noticeable amount of weight.

Rumours quickly circulated that Chung might have developed ALS—a degenerative motor neuron disease that her mother suffered from—and that her health was declining.

However, her friends dismissed these claims, clarifying that she simply had the flu that day and was feeling exhausted.
