Former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer has suggested that star batter Rohit Sharma should have continued as India's ODI captain, as well as captain of the Mumbai Indians (MI). While Shubman Gill replaced Rohit as India's captain last year during the white-ball tour of Australia, Hardik Pandya took over the reins at MI ahead of IPL 2024 following his trade from the Gujarat Titans (GT). Jaffer admitted that while Gill has done a decent job since replacing Rohit at the helm, the baton should ideally have been passed on after the 2027 ODI World Cup.

"Rohit Sharma should have been retained as the ODI captain. He should have also remained the captain of Mumbai Indians. I won't say the decision was completely wrong, as Shubman Gill has done well, but when you have someone like Rohit Sharma available, he should be the captain. You can always pass the baton to Shubman Gill after the 50-over World Cup," Jaffer said in a video on his YouTube channel.

Rohit, despite all the chatter around his place and fitness, continues to go strong. He is India's third-highest run-scorer in ODIs, with 12,120 runs in 291 ODIs and 283 innings at an average of 49.26, with 35 centuries and 63 fifties, with a best score of 264.

He has maintained a rich run of form in ODIs this year, with 604 runs across 12 innings at an average of 50.33 and a strike rate of 104.67, including two centuries and two fifties and best score of 138.

During the ODIs against WI, he was India's second-highest run-scorer, with 225 runs in three innings at an average of 75.00 and a strike rate of over 115, including a century and a fifty and a best score of 101.

Rohit will be in action next against New Zealand in five-match ODI series away from home from November 4 onwards and then three Sri Lanka ODIs at home from December 13 onwards.
