Indonesia plans 40,000 mini aquaculture systems with Australia

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia plans to develop 40,000 mini-recirculating aquaculture systems with Australia, aiming to raise fish-farming productivity and strengthen food security in hundreds of villages nationwide.
Marine Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono said Indonesia is ready to adopt the technology after observing its use in Tasmania to improve aquaculture productivity.
Trenggono made the remarks while meeting Australian Ambassador Rod Brazier in Jakarta on Tuesday, Sept. 1, to discuss cooperation on recirculating aquaculture systems.
RAS continuously treats and recycles water, allowing fish farms to use water more efficiently while maintaining production, according to the ministry.
The technology is expected to improve productivity and efficiency in Indonesia’s aquaculture sector, Trenggono said.
His ministry will initially deploy mini-RAS systems for tilapia and catfish farming before expanding them to pangasius, barramundi, grouper and jade perch.
Trenggono said Indonesia also wants deeper fisheries cooperation with Australia that delivers tangible economic benefits to local communities.
He said cooperation should extend beyond investment to community empowerment, production-capacity building, technology transfers and development of a sustainable fisheries ecosystem.
Brazier said Australia remained open to exchanging expertise with Indonesia, citing its experience in developing technologies to support the aquaculture industry.
Australia has conducted research to increase aquaculture productivity while reducing the sector’s environmental impact, he said.
Brazier said Indonesia and Australia could combine their respective strengths to protect natural ecosystems and strengthen food security.
