DC Officially Announces Full Details of Green Lantern's New Lantern Color

Robert Wood is a writer and editor based out of Cheshire, England. He is the author of 'The False Elephant: and 99 Other Unreasonably Short Stories' - 100 stories, each told in exactly 100 words.

Rob got into comics via Bendis' Ultimate Spider-Man and the UK anthology 'The Mighty World of Marvel,' which was running Frank Miller's Daredevil, Classic Hulk and Contest of Champions II.

Prior to journalism, he worked in copywriting and copyedited for Oxford University Press. He is on X as @PinchTwigs and Instagram as roobwoodjourno.

DC has finally laid out the rules for Green Lantern's new color of Lantern, revealing why there's only one of them and why they're so incredibly powerful.

Where once the Green Lanterns were alone in the universe, stories since have introduced a whole spectrum of different Lantern Corps, each connected to a different emotion - the rageful Red Lanterns, the fearsome Sinestro Corps and the compassionate Indigo Tribe.

Recently, DC introduced a new color of Lantern, raising questions about how they fit into the Emotional Spectrum and Green Lantern history. Now, DC has given fans key answers to those questions.

Lobo Explains Mauve Lantern Backstory

In the recent Lobo #8 - from Skottie Young, Jorge Corona, Sarah Stern and Nate Piekos - fans learn more about the Mauve Lantern. Previous issues introduced Francis as a naive Green Lantern whose immense capacity for joy warped his powers, turning his green ring mauve. As a Mauve Lantern, Francis could summon constructs of whatever gave him joy.

In Francis' early days, he fell afoul of a young Lobo, who stole his ring and caused chaos. Fans now learn that following this humiliation, the Guardians of the Universe gave Francis another chance, leading to a period where he was an effective galactic hero. However, after Lobo carried out a genocide on his home planet, Francis was stripped of his ring and powers.

Lobo #8 reveals that Francis' failure was seen as so terrible, the Green Lanterns actively prevented the creation of any more Mauve Lanterns. This reveal explains why, when Geoff Johns introduced the concept of the Emotional Spectrum in 2005, Mauve Lanterns weren't included - there has only ever been one.

The issue also explains how Francis became so powerful - his rage at Lobo cut off his connection to the Mauve Light of Glee, and he dedicated his life to finding out how to permanently kill Lobo. Empowered by the "Witch of the Wistless Coven" and cyborg implants, Francis unlocked powerful energy weapons which seemingly forcibly tap into the Light.

This weaponry makes Francis powerful enough to kill Lobo, despite the Main Man's peerless healing factor. The comic jumps ahead a year at its conclusion, revealing that Lobo has remained dead thanks to the combination of Francis' weaponry and magic.

What About The 'Blood Garnet Lantern'?

One detail surprisingly missing from this issue is the idea of Francis being a "Blood Garnet Lantern." This term is seemingly used to describe Francis in the summary for Lobo #9, but it's not one Francis claims this issue. Indeed, he even explicitly says he kept his former name, not wanting to feel that Lobo took it from him.

The summary also suggests that Francis may have died taking down Lobo, leaving big questions about his fate. The summary reads:

BURIAL FOR A BASTICH. After Lobo sacrificed his life to stop the Blood Garnet Lantern, the universe and those who loved him must learn how to live without the Main Man. They're all putting up a strong front. The DCU must be filled with the kind of people who grieve by going along like nothing important happened, but they're really hurting inside. What brave, strange souls (?) will rise to fill the beefy hole in our hearts? And how does Lobo's ghost (LoBOO!) feel about all of this?

How Happiness Fits Into Green Lantern Lore

green lantern lore's happy the Axolotl

Lobo is a funny comic with a unique tone, but it's still DC canon, meaning Mauve Lanterns are an undeniable part of Green Lantern lore. Interestingly, they fit pretty neatly into it.

There's no established part of the Emotional Spectrum that deals primarily with happiness/joy/glee, however there is a 'Lantern' who has this role. The recently introduced Happy the Axolotl manifested Lantern powers during a time when the Spectrum was fractured, allowing those who experienced extreme emotions to tap into new powers.

Pink/Mauve Lanterns shouldn't be confused with Green Lantern's Star Sapphires, who utilize the Violet Light of Love.

With Happy's light being pink, it actually makes sense that the nearby emotion of glee would be mauve. With the Spectrum fixed and Happy still residing on the planet Oa, there's a lot still to explore about the powers of Lanterns who tap into happiness, and Francis may end up being a bigger deal to Green Lantern lore than anyone expected when he first debuted.

Lobo #8 is available now from DC Comics.
