Avengers: Endgame's new ending explained by Anthony Russo

Avengers: Endgame is officially back in cinemas through the Encore edition (with technically two versions, as the Infinity Vision screenings have more footage than regular screens) with extra scenes tying it into the upcoming Doomsday, some during the credits and one before.

Directors Joe and Anthony Russo have stated multiple times before that the scenes would be "required" viewing to understand Doomsday, but now that they are out there for the world to see, Anthony has gone into more detail.

At an Encore screening with 92NY, Russo was asked if any character choices in Endgame have taken on a new meaning now that Doomsday is on the way.

"Well, I mean you all just saw Endgame Encore, and there's certainly a pivotal moment in that film at the end, where the moment has a different meaning.

"You know, we play one beat past where Steve Rogers' story ended with Peggy Carter, and in that moment, that's sort of where Doomsday is born."

He also talked about the balancing act of "being faithful" but wanting to "challenge" the audience and himself as a creator when returning to this established world, citing Robert Downey Jr's casting as Dr Doom as one of the big tightropes.

Another fan asked what he would wish for if he had collected all the Infinity Stones, and he asked for "another month on Doomsday", implying that finishing the film in time for its release is proving to be a pretty stressful endeavour.

Given the sheer amount of characters and plotlines the film has to juggle, the fact it had to be quickly reworked from its original incarnation as The Kang Dynasty, and the fact that it started filming without a finished script, it's no wonder.

Avengers: Doomsday is released in UK cinemas on 16 December, while Endgame Encore is out now.
