Jaoko Oburu Confronts Maverick Aoko Over False Death Report on Father

Translate

Social media commentator Maverick Aoko has clashed with Jaoko Oburu, son of ODM Party Leader Oburu Oginga, after a post claiming the veteran politician had died sparked confusion and concern online.

The controversy unfolded on Tuesday evening, October 6, after Aoko shared a brief but explosive message on X announcing the alleged death.

Aoko’s viral death claim

Aoko posted in capital letters:

“OBURU ODINGA YOUTH LEADER IS DEAD!”

The post offered no further explanation or source, immediately triggering reactions from social media users who interpreted it as a report about the wellbeing of Oburu Oginga.

The message caught the attention of Jaoko Oburu, who responded by criticising Aoko for sharing the unverified claim.

Jaoko calls out Aoko

Quoting Aoko’s post, Jaoko wrote:

“This is very careless of you Maverick Aoko.”

His response prompted further discussion online, with users seeking clarification about Oburu’s actual condition.

Aoko later hit back at Jaoko, questioning why he had not directly denied the claim.

“You are not denying that he is dead. My condolences senior advisor. Wacha youth leader apumzike. Wajaluo pia wapate new beginning yawa, tho!”

The exchange intensified the speculation as social media users followed the back-and-forth between the two.

Oburu’s office dismisses death reports

As the claims continued circulating, Oburu’s secretariat issued a statement dismissing the reports as “malicious, unfounded fake news and propaganda”.

The office assured the public, ODM members and residents of Siaya County that Oburu was alive and recovering.

“We wish to assure the general public, members of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), the people of Siaya County, and the entire nation that Dr Oburu Oginga is well, safe, and in good spirits,” the statement said.

According to the secretariat, Oburu was following doctors’ instructions to rest and avoid heavy physical engagements but remained mentally alert and involved in party and national affairs.

Gladys Wanga gives health update

ODM national chairperson Gladys Wanga also sought to reassure the public after visiting Oburu.

Wanga said the veteran politician was recovering steadily and remained in good spirits.

“My PL Dr Oburu is recovering steadily. I was with him this evening and he is in high spirits. We continue to pray for his full recovery.”

Her update further contradicted the death claims circulating online.

Legal action considered

Oburu’s secretariat said it was consulting the ODM leadership over possible legal action against those responsible for spreading the reports.

“We are in communication with the party leadership to handle the matter legally,” the office stated.

The incident has once again highlighted how quickly unverified claims involving prominent public figures can spread on social media.
