Why PowerBall got easier to win in 2026, and the maths behind it

Translate

Ask most PowerBall players why PowerBall odds 2026 improved, and you’ll get a shrug.

The real answer comes down to one small number pool getting smaller.

What actually changed under Sizekhaya

When Sizekhaya took over as the National Lottery operator in June 2026, the main PowerBall draw kept its five numbers from a pool of 1 to 50, but the separate PowerBall number itself shrank from a pool of 1 to 20 down to just 1 to 16.

It sounds like a small tweak, but it moves the jackpot odds from 1 in 42,375,200 down to 1 in 33,900,160, a precise 20% improvement.

Why four fewer numbers makes a real difference

The maths is simpler than it looks.

Matching the five main numbers has always been the hardest part of winning, with the odds for that portion staying exactly the same at 1 in 2,118,760.

What changed is the final number: picking correctly from 16 options instead of 20 is meaningfully easier, which accounts for the entire odds improvement without touching the main draw at all.

It’s not just the jackpot that got better

The smaller PowerBall pool also improves your odds in the lower prize divisions, since matching the PowerBall number alone, or alongside a handful of the main numbers, now happens more often too.

Ticket price did increase alongside the change, from R5 to R10 for a standard board, and PowerBall Xtra rose from R2.50 to R5.

It is actually lekker knowing your odds got that much better without changing how you play.

Did you notice PowerBall getting easier this year, or did this change fly under your radar?
