BMKG warns of rain, haze and poor visibility in several major cities

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) forecast rain, haze and reduced visibility in several major Indonesian cities on Friday, urging residents to monitor changing weather conditions.

BMKG forecaster Ranika Dwi said atmospheric conditions triggering rain and reduced visibility should be watched closely in several areas during an online weather briefing from Jakarta.

"Moderate rain is possible in Nabire, while light rain is expected in Medan, Jambi, Bengkulu, Tanjung Selor, Mamuju, Palu, Jayapura, Jayawijaya and Merauke," she said.

Rain-producing clouds could develop as wind convergence and confluence zones extend from western to eastern Indonesia, including the Malacca Strait, North Natuna Sea, Makassar Strait and Pacific Ocean north of Papua, she added.

BMKG also warned of possible smoke or haze affecting Bandar Lampung, Pontianak and Manokwari.

Hazy conditions are also forecast in Pekanbaru, Padang, Palembang, Palangkaraya, Banjarmasin and Ternate.

Other areas, including Banda Aceh, Tanjung Pinang, Pangkal Pinang, Samarinda, most of Java, Denpasar, Mataram, Kupang, Makassar, Kendari, Gorontalo, Manado, Ambon and Sorong, are expected to be mostly partly cloudy to overcast.

BMKG urged residents to prepare for changing weather and regularly monitor atmospheric conditions through its official website, bmkg.go.id.
