Avoid sharing videos, unverified info on Banga School shooting, DICT warns

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) on Friday called on the public not to share graphic videos and images, as well as unverified information on social media concerning the school shooting incident in Banga, South Cotabato.

“Let us respect the privacy and dignity of the victims and their families while allowing authorities to conduct a thorough investigation,” the DICT said in a statement.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) reported that at least six students were killed and 17 others were injured following the school shooting incident.

The Department of Education (DepEd) also expressed deep concern over the reported shooting incident at Banga National High School in Banga.

The DICT said it stands ready to provide assistance within its mandate and coordinate with concerned agencies should communications or technical support be needed.

“The DICT joins the Department of Education, local authorities, and the entire community in strongly affirming the need to protect our schools as safe spaces for learning and to uphold the safety, well-being, and dignity of every learner and educator,” it said.

“The DICT strongly condemns the reported shooting incident at Banga National High School in South Cotabato. Violence in and around educational institutions has no place in our communities, and the safety and protection of our learners, educators, and school personnel must remain a paramount concern,” it added. —LDF, GMA News
