Indonesia explores cassava processing investment in Mozambique

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Trade is exploring investment cooperation opportunities with Mozambique, particularly in the development of the cassava processing industry to increase the added value of the country's agricultural commodities.
The cooperation covers the use of cultivation technology, productivity improvements, and the development of cassava processing facilities. These initiatives are expected to attract investment and strengthen economic ties between Indonesia and Mozambique.
"Indonesia and Mozambique have great potential to deepen mutually beneficial economic ties by increasing bilateral trade, expanding market access, and creating investment opportunities with added economic value," Trade Minister Budi Santoso said in a statement on Saturday.
The minister then highlighted the importance of optimizing the Indonesia-Mozambique Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) to facilitate trade and support the utilization of tariff preferences.
The agreement, signed on August 27, 2019, provides preferential access for 242 tariff lines for Mozambican products and 217 tariff lines for Indonesian products.
On the occasion, Indonesia proposed the holding of a second Joint Committee Meeting on the Indonesia-Mozambique PTA to review its implementation and explore ways to expand cooperation toward a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
Both countries further encouraged closer government and business ties through business matching and participation in trade exhibitions.
Meanwhile, Mozambique's Minister of State for Trade, António do Rosário Grispos, conveyed the importance of strengthening trade relations with Indonesia by increasing market access and utilizing the Indonesia-Mozambique PTA agreement.
Grispos acknowledged Indonesia as a strategic partner in expanding the market for Mozambique's leading products in ASEAN. He added that both countries could boost trade by diversifying commodities and strengthening business ties.
From January to August 2026, total trade between the two countries was recorded at US$110.7 million. Indonesian exports to Mozambique reached US$88.9 million, while imports from the country were US$21.9 million.
Meanwhile, in 2025, the total trade reached US$162.8 million, consisting of Indonesian exports of US$107.8 million and imports of US$55 million.
Indonesia's main export commodities to Mozambique include palm oil and its fractions, soap, industrial fatty acids and derivatives, margarine, and cement, while Indonesia's main import commodities from Mozambique include tobacco, coal, industrial minerals, and natural graphite.
