SEPANG, Oct 8 — Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing departed for home this afternoon after concluding a two-day official visit to Malaysia.

Min Aung Hlaing was given a red-carpet ceremonial send-off and a guard-of-honour by the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment, led by Capt Wan Muhammad Amirul Syafiq Wan Zamri at Bunga Raya Complex (BRC) of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) here.

His delegation boarded a special flight at 2.10pm. They were sent off by Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, who was the minister in attendance for the visit.

Min Aung Hlaing, who arrived yesterday, was accorded an official welcome at the Perdana Putra Complex in Putrajaya this morning.

After the ceremony, he proceeded to have a four-eyed meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, followed by a delegation meeting before attending a luncheon hosted by Anwar.

During the meetings, Malaysia and Myanmar agreed to strengthen bilateral ties, prioritise people-centric cooperation, and support Myanmar’s efforts to pursue reforms and policy adjustments aimed at addressing the country’s complex challenges.

The visit also resulted in Myanmar agreeing to accept the large-scale repatriation of its nationals at its own expense.

Speaking at a joint press conference, Anwar said more than 10,493 Myanmar citizens and personnel had so far been repatriated to Myanmar through flights and naval ships, with further repatriation to be negotiated between Malaysia’s Ministry of Home Affairs and its Myanmar counterpart.

He said the remaining Myanmar nationals would be repatriated according to the stipulated rules and procedures, subject to verification of their records.

Economic ties between Malaysia and Myanmar also showed significant potential, with bilateral economic activities increasing by more than 140 per cent year-on-year. — Bernama
