Xin Yee-Carmen advance, Weijie-Ee Yi retire at Hylo Open

KUALA LUMPUR: Women's doubles pair Ong Xin Yee-Carmen Ting made a winning start to their Hylo Open campaign in Saarbrucken, Germany, on Tuesday, providing a bright spot for Malaysia as men's doubles pair Chia Weijie-Teo Ee Yi bowed out through retirement.
World No. 27 Xin Yee-Carmen took 35 minutes to overcome England's world No. 83 Abbygael Harris-Estelle van Leeuwen 21-12, 21-17 in their opening-round encounter at the Saarlandhalle.
They will face a tougher test in the second round against Hong Kong's eighth seeds Yeung Nga Ting-Yeung Pui Lam as they look to extend their campaign at the Super 500 tournament.
It was a disappointing outing, however, for Weijie-Ee Yi, whose challenge ended prematurely against England's second seeds Ben Lane-Sean Vendy.
The world No. 43 Malaysians lost the opening game 21-14 and were trailing 11-7 in the second when they retired after just 20 minutes on court.
The reason for their retirement was not immediately known.
Meanwhile, Arctic Open winners Aaron Tai-Yap Roy King advanced earlier after cruising past Germany's Malik Bourakkadi-Kenneth Neumann 21-11, 21-12 in 28 minutes.
Malaysia's challenge continues on Wednesday with three more first-round matches, including mixed doubles pair Hoo Pang Ron-Lai Pei Jing, who finished runners-up at the French Open in Paris last Sunday.
The independent pair, who lost to China's world No. 1 Feng Yanzhe-Huang Dong Ping in the final, will be looking to carry their impressive recent form into Saarbrucken, where they are scheduled to face Dutch opponents Joep Strooper-Sterre Bang.
Their French Open achievement followed a semi-final appearance at the Denmark Open earlier this month.
In men's singles, Lee Zii Jia will open his campaign against Singapore's Teh Jia Heng, while Cheam June Wei faces India's Kiran George.
The Hylo Open is the fourth and final stop of the European swing on the BWF World Tour.
