Surigao del Sur cops push youth protection after Zamboanga shooting

Translate

SAN FRANCISCO, AGUSAN DEL SUR, Philippines — The Surigao del Sur Provincial Police Office has intensified its advocacy on youth protection by raising awareness about the dangers of harmful ideologies, emphasizing the need for stronger collaboration among families, schools, and communities in safeguarding young people.

The campaign gains significance following the shooting incident at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University Junior High School campus on August 18.

In its information campaign, the Surigao del Sur Provincial Police Office warned about the possible effects of negative mindsets such as nihilism, which involves the belief that life lacks meaning or purpose and may lead to hopelessness and indifference, and misanthropy, which refers to deep distrust or hatred toward humanity that may result in isolation and hostility.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) had stressed that protecting the youth is a shared responsibility involving parents, educators, communities, and law enforcement. It urged the public to strengthen community connections, promote mental health awareness, encourage meaningful engagement, and remain vigilant in recognizing signs that a young person may be struggling.

“Safeguarding our youth is a shared responsibility that requires the collective efforts of the entire community,” the PNP said, reaffirming its commitment to work hand-in-hand with parents and educators to protect the welfare of young Filipinos.

Through continued awareness efforts, the police hope to build stronger minds, safer communities, and a more hopeful citizenry. /cb
