Weather Report: calm skies, one warning

Wednesday, 9 September’s Weather Report shows partly cloudy and cool to warm conditions across most of the country, with fog patches lingering in several provinces this morning.

SAWS has issued an extremely high fire danger warning for the Laingsburg Local Municipality in the Western Cape.

Gauteng sees morning fog patches in the south, otherwise a partly cloudy and cool day.

A “high” UVB sunburn index is in effect, so sun precautions are worth taking if you’re outdoors for long.

according to SAWS, fog and cool conditions dominate the interior today

Mpumalanga sees morning fog patches along the escarpment and in places over the Highveld, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to cold, with drizzle along the escarpment.

Limpopo starts with morning fog and drizzle along the escarpment, otherwise cloudy and cool to warm, becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon.

North West sees cloudy skies in the north at first, otherwise partly cloudy and cool.

The Free State sees morning fog patches in the east, otherwise a partly cloudy and cool day.

The Northern Cape sees morning fog patches along the coast, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm, but fine in the west, hot in places.

The Western Cape sees morning fog along the west coast, otherwise fine and warm to hot, turning partly cloudy over the southwest and south coast from the afternoon. The UVB sunburn index here is “very high” today.

Both halves of the Eastern Cape stay cool in the extreme north, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot.

KwaZulu-Natal sees morning fog patches over the interior, otherwise a partly cloudy and cool to warm day. The UVB sunburn index is “very high” here too.

SAWS has flagged extremely high fire danger for the Laingsburg Local Municipality in the Western Cape, meaning conditions there could allow fires to develop and spread rapidly.

Looking ahead, SAWS’s extended outlook for Wednesday and Thursday points to a similar pattern continuing, fine in places, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm.

It’s a fairly settled day for most of the country, but that fire danger warning is a good reminder that calm weather doesn’t always mean risk-free weather.
